Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies, but two weeks is recommended

Brooklyn Book Bodega has a mission of increasing the number of 100+ book homes in NYC for kids ages 0 - 18. Your family can help by running a book drive. Just follow these easy steps:
  1. Pick your dates: We recommend a length of two weeks, including two weekends, for your book drive.
  2. Set a goal: Make it meaningful and reach for the highest number you can.
  3. Fill out the form: We want to share the news of your book drive.
  4. Print, Download, Share a sign: Hang up on donation bins and spread the word on social media sites.
  5. Start collecting! Collect gently used and new books for ages 0-18 including foreign language, dual language and nonfiction books. Please no religious, textbooks, activity books, encyclopedias, broken, or missing pages books. Here is a list of Popular Book Requests. Please note: All books must still be counted and sorted by our volunteers.
  6. Organize your donations. Sort all books into banker's boxes so that they are easy to lift. Books are heavy! Before you drop off your books, review this guide. Organize them by general age level, type, or category. For example, here are typical categories: picture books, board books, early chapter books, chapter books, preschool, elementary books, young adult, high school, etc. Please do not send any books that you would not want in your own home or are not for ages 0-18. For example, do not give us: torn books, books with scribbles, or adult books.
  7. Label the boxes. Don't forget to label each box with the book type/category.
  8. Tag us on Social Media. Don't forget to follow us on social media and tag us during your book drive Instagram @brooklynbookbodega, Twitter @BodegaBook, Facebook @Bklynbookbodega.
  9. Bring your book donations to us! At the conclusion of your book drive, contact us brooklynbookbodega@gmail.com to arrange a drop off time to our storage location.
Contact: brooklynbookbodega@gmail.com. Click here to register your book drive. Brooklyn Book Bodega is also looking for kids and teens to write reviews for books to share with others: https://www.brooklynbookbodega.org/readers-corner

Met Council

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Items can be sent to:
Leah Schechter
Met Council Fulfillment Center
171 Lexington Ave
New York, NY 10016

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Met Council is America's largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity and respect. So many of our clients have come to us because they had no one else to turn to for food, for housing, for someone to care for them. We are committed to our mission of getting emergency food to all of our clients and taking care of the senior residents that live in our buildings. The hardest part of COVID-19 is the isolation, loneliness, fear and anxiety that many of our seniors and Holocaust survivors are experiencing while they stay home to remain safe. We want to remind them that we are here for them, even if we can't sit next to them. We want to send mail to our over 1400 senior residents just to give them a connection every day!

You can help from home by creating connections by mail! Kids, teens, adults, anyone who wants to help can send us:
  • Poetry
  • Letters
  • Short stories
  • Plays
  • Essays on interesting topics (High school kids- Start writing your college essays early!!)
  • Cards
  • Illustrations, drawings, art work
Anything that can be mailed... or slipped under the door to our seniors in their apartments would help to make our seniors feel connected! Thank you in advance for all your time, thoughts, and help to make sure our seniors and survivors know we are here and thinking about them.

Location: Online

Ages: Everyone can help

Time Commitment: Varies

Samaritan House provides more than 1,500 low income kids throughout San Mateo County with new backpacks and school supplies to start the school year. This year, the need is growing across our community. At Samaritan House we believe children deserve to have everything they need to learn and grow. While the upcoming school year will look different for most, we're streamlining a safe system for our annual backpack giveaway so kids in need can be ready for school nonetheless. It's always been a wonderful sight to see all who resolve to organize such joyful (and colorful) drives. However, to avoid group gatherings and the contact required of walk in drop offs, all donations of fully assembled backpack kits will be conducted online this year. You can support our client children by purchasing these prefilled backpacks online. Click here for detailed information.

Contact: info@samaritanhousesanmateo.org. Click here to select the backpacks(s) you'd like to donate.

Help the TCV Foodbank
Tri-City Volunteers

Date/Time: Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm

Location: 37350 Joseph St., Fremont

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. We need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help us sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise our boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items to struggling families. Community volunteers are the heart of our agency. Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life our vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. While volunteers assist families in Tri-City Volunteers' food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of our work.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer.

Time Commitment: Minimum of two hours

Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military. Operation Gratitude encourages people to knit scarves and hats for donation in winter, but in summer, their focus is on helping troops stay cool. Their website provides step by step instructions on how to make a "cool tie" which is a type of bandana filled with water-absorbent polymers that troops tie around their neck to help keep body temperature down in hot climates. The website also provides details on shipping cool ties and other donations you may want to send for care packages. It's always a nice idea to include some hand-written notes of support and encouragement to show our troops how much their sacrifice means to us.

Take Kindness on the Road!

Will you and your kids be going on any long car or plane rides this summer? Consider bringing paper and crayons/colored pencils and creating cards for local nonprofits!

  • DOROT's greeting card project helps bring joy and celebration to some of our frailest and most isolated seniors. Each month, DOROT mails over 200 birthday cards to seniors. Every card is designed and created by volunteers. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Full directions can be found at on their website.
  • God's Love We Deliver (GLWD) believes that what makes God's Love so special is the personal touch they add to every meal. This includes special meals on holidays and a personalized cake for each client on his or her birthday. To accompany the cake, we include birthday cards and to accompany our holiday meals, we package them in decorated holiday bags, all made by local elementary and high school students.  For full instructions, contact GLWD at volunteer@glwd.org or 212.294.8158.

Operation Gratitude

Chatsworth, CA 91311
Review the shipping page for more information.

Honor our Service Men and Women this July 4th! Make "Cool Ties" to keep our troops cool. Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military.
