Date/Time: Flexible, meals are needed six days a week. Check the calendar on Meal Train for available dates. The first half of 2019 lunch dates are now available for sign-up. Meals should be dropped off between 8-11am;  prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Location: 341 Broadway, Cambridge

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver the meal to On the Rise. This volunteer opportunity fills one of their greatest needs by being able to offer a healthy and hearty meal to a woman who otherwise would not have many options. Don't shy away from this opportunity even if you don't consider yourself a cook; store bought and pre-made items are also welcome. As the women are as diverse as their palates, you choose what you would like to make; it is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed! Shopping, preparing and cooking these meals is a wonderful opportunity to give back with your children, as they can get involved at any age. To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. The women self-serve lunch; please package lunch buffet or family style (no individually wrapped items). Lunch should be enough to serve 15-20 people. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Ages: All ages can participate.

Time Commitment: Flexible, this can be a one-time opportunity or you may sign up for multiple shifts throughout the year.

Contact: Keyton Sheely, keyton.sheely@ontherise.org, 617.497.7968. Volunteers self schedule dates on Meal Train. Dates in blue mean a person has already signed up to cook a lunch for that day. Dates in green are available for lunch. Simply click on the day you'd like and register! You'll get a reminder email one week before your scheduled date as well as a day before reminder.

Now in its fifth year, Room to Grow's Annual Holiday Toy Drive collects thousands of toys for babies in low-income families. During a child's first three years, toys play a critical role in helping babies learn and grow. At every three-month visit to Room to Grow, social workers guide families in choosing five educational toys to support their baby's development, preparing them for future learning and success.

By providing educational toys to Room to Grow, you are helping babies:
  • Develop new skills such as reaching, grasping, and crawling
  • Learn colors, numbers, and shapes
  • Strengthen memory skills
Ways you can contribute:
  1. Hold a toy drive in your community.
  2. Celebrate your toy drive by sharing your stories and pictures on social media (@roomtogroworg)
  3. Donate new or nearly new toys appropriate for newborns through children age three.
  4. Purchase urgently needed toys from our Amazon wishlist.
Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

You and your family can help people who've spent years living on our streets and in shelters feel warmth and excitement as they move into their new place and get started on their new lives by providing the essential items we all need to make our house a home. By assembling and donating Housewarming Baskets, you'll be an important part of welcoming people into their new homes where they'll find the stability and serenity they need to begin their journey to hopeful, peaceful futures. It's as simple as assembling new (not used) items like cleaning supplies, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, a set of sheets or towels, in a basket to be given as a housewarming gift to someone about to move into a place of their own- many for the first time in their lives.

Help Collect Hygiene Essentials
Hope and Comfort

Date/Time: Please contact Pat Flaherty at pflaherty@hopeandcomfort.org to arrange a time to drop off items.

Location: Hope and Comfort Warehouse, 1238 Chestnut Street, Newton
Items may also be mailed to:
Hope and Comfort
P.O. Box 241
Newton Upper Falls, MA 02464

Hope and Comfort's mission is to provide essential hygiene products to support and improve the health, self-esteem, and hygiene education of school-aged children and young adults in need within Greater Boston. Here are a few ways that your family can help:

Community Toiletry Drives
Run a community toiletry drive to collect everyday hygiene essentials like shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste to make sure youth have basic items they need to stay clean and feel empowered. Drives can be done just about anywhere - at your school, in your neighborhood, at your place of worship, or even at a local business.
Well-Wish Cards for Kids
Spread smiles by sharing your art and words of encouragement! Cards you make will be distributed alongside Hope and Comfort's basic hygiene kits, which go out to young people in need. Small cards can be made on a half-sheet or folded sheet of construction paper; get as creative as you'd like! Each card should feature a drawing and/or a quick positive message.
Hope and Comfort Birthday Party
Make your next birthday party even more special - for both you and someone in need! Have a Hope and Comfort birthday party by asking friends and relatives to bring new hygiene items to your party instead of (or along with!) presents. Those gifts will in turn be used to create basic hygiene kits for youth who can't otherwise afford basic essentials such as soap, deodorant, and toothpaste.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Contact: Pat Flaherty, pflaherty@hopeandcomfort.org for more information and for materials to help you get started with any of these projects.

With the help of Meals on Wheels programs, seniors and people with disabilities get the nourishment and human connection needed to support daily activities, while reducing the need for medical support. For some recipients, these daily meals are the difference between living in their own homes and moving to a nursing home. Think of how fun it would be for Meals on Wheels recipients in your community to receive their meals in brightly decorated lunch bags! Back to School Backpack Drive
JFS Metrowest

Date/Time: Monday, August 27, 10am - noon, and Tuesday, August 28, 10am - noon

Location(s):
  • Framingham Public Library, 49 Lexington St, Framingham, August 27
  • Wellesley Public Library, 530 Washington Street, Wellesley, August 28
With summer flying by, it's time to start getting ready for the upcoming school year by lending a helping hand to children in the Metrowest area. This is the seventh consecutive year of the Build-a-Backpack event, where the goal is to give away 275 backpacks full of school supplies to families in our community who need them the most. Every year, JFS collects school supplies for children ages five to ten through corporate donations and local supply drives. Volunteers (often families with young children) are asked to bring new backpacks to the event where they stuff them full of school supplies, choosing who the backpack will go to, i.e. 2nd grade girl, 4th grade boy, etc. Then JFS distributes the filled backpacks to the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham as well as the parent information center for the Framingham Public Schools. Please bring a backpack or two with you.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Very flexible. The event runs for two hours but time needed will depend on how long it takes for your family to pack the backpack you bring.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Monday, September 3, 9am - noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. But younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why we offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. At the Family Service Day on the Farm, adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and animal meet & greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. This program is a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Ages: This program is for children in grades 2 - 6. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Time Commitment: Three hours

Contact: humaneeducation@mspca.org, 978.687.7453. Registration is available online. Families are also welcome to join our kids programs Facebook group http://www.mspca.org/nevinseducation

Grow Extra to Share
Ample Harvest

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Your own garden or join a community garden near you.

Do you like to garden? One out of six Americans is food insecure, meaning they don't know where their next meal will come from. No matter where you live, there are people in your community that are experiencing hunger. Food pantries help fill in the gaps but are continuously lacking in healthy, fresh produce to offer. Luckily, you can help alleviate this issue in your own neighborhood! By planting just a little extra to donate, you can improve the health of your community as well. When you donate your excess garden bounty, you are helping to relieve hunger and making an impact on obesity and other food-related diseases. Consider planting an extra row or even a few additional plants to donate to a local food pantry. And if you find yourself with a runaway zucchini plant or another bountiful crop that gives you more than you can eat, don't let it go to waste! Even a small donation will help increase food security in your area.

Ages: All ages can participate, depending on the garden or farm

Time Commitment: Varies

Contact: You can find an interested local food pantry near you on the Ample Harvest website. www.ampleharvest.org

Making Lunch for the Ladies
On The Rise, Inc

Date/Time: Flexible, meals are needed six days a week. Check the calendar on Meal Train for available dates. Meals should be dropped off between 8-11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Location: 341 Broadway, Cambridge

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver to On the Rise directly. Entrées should serve 20 - 25 people. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Ages: All ages can participate.

Time Commitment: Flexible, this can be a one-time opportunity or you may sign up for multiple shifts throughout the year

You'll get a reminder email one week before your scheduled date as well as a one day before reminder.

Newton Kids PMC Bike Ride
PMC Kids Rides

Date/Time: Sunday, May 20, 8 - 11am

Location: 180 Wells Ave., Newton

The PMC is a 38-year-old cycling event that has raised over $500 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund to support cancer patients and medical staff working to eradicate this terrible disease. The PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to Dana-Farber and is the institute's largest single contributor, raising more than 52 percent of the annual revenue at The Jimmy Fund. Adult riders bike one of 12 routes throughout Massachusetts annually during the first weekend of August. Building on that success, the PMC launched an extension of the event called the PMC Kids Ride. PMC Kids Rides are mini bike-a-thons that involve kids ages 2 to 15 in the PMC mission by providing them the opportunity to fight cancer just like adults. This is a great way to get kids involved in raising money for an amazing cause. There is a minimum $30 fundraising requirement, although we encourage riders to raise at least $50, if possible. Two-wheeled riders will zoom around a one-mile loop on Wells Avenue in Newton as many times as they can from 9 to 10am. The 3-wheeled and balance bike crowd will tear it up on a separate tot course. Be sure to stick around for the post-ride party starting at 10am. There will be food, face painting, bike decorating, raffles, and more.

Ages: The ride is for children ages 3 to 13. Teens 14 and older are welcome to volunteer at the event.

Time Commitment: Three hours

Contact: Christina Perez, cperezmail@yahoo.com. Registration for the ride is available online.

The Birthday Giving Project -- Birthday in a Box
Family-to-Family

Date/Time: Flexible, at your convenience

Location: Please email birthdays@family-to-family.org before you start your boxes.
If you are making five or more boxes, Family-to-Family will connect with a pantry, battered women's shelter, or a homeless shelter in your area where you can deliver them. If you make fewer than five boxes, they should be shipped to one of the impoverished communities we serve through our hunger relief program.

It's hard for many of us - adults or children - to imagine celebrating a child's birthday without a party or presents. But for many of the families served by Family-to-Family, finding the extra money to afford a child's birthday celebration is a struggle at best, and frequently impossible. You and your family can help by providing a small "party in a box" for a child in need which will also help give your children an opportunity to learn empathy in a concrete way by helping another child. Decorate and fill shoe boxes with everything needed for a small birthday party. (Or, pretty, decorated shopping bags can be used instead.) Each box goes to a different child. You can make a birthday box for one child, or you can put together multiple boxes for a group of children. If you are making multiple boxes, please make them for different ages! Learn more on the Birthday Giving Project page.

First:
Pick an age (or ages) and choose either boy(s) or girl(s) to send your box to. Find a large sneaker-sized shoe box (or use a party bag), and buy the things needed for a party. Please include:
  • Box of cake mix
  • Can of frosting
  • Birthday candles (no matches please!)
  • Wall decoration (like streamers, or a happy birthday banner)
  • Children's book for the aged child you are making the box for
  • Another ($10-$15) gift for that child.
  • If you like, you can also include a goody bag filled with small surprises
Next:
  • Wrap the book and the gift in birthday paper.
  • Wrap the top and bottom of the shoe box separately (so that even wrapped, the box can be opened), and fill the wrapped box with the things you have gathered.
  • If you would like to give the child you're giving your box to a chance to write back to you, include a postcard with a stamp on it, addressed to you, c/o Family to Family, PO Box 255, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, 10706. Then email us at birthdays@family-to-family.org, put "birthday postcards" in the subject of the email, and tell us your name and address. Also tell us that you've included a postcard in your box, so we'll be able to forward the postcard to you if we get it.
  • You can also make a birthday card to put inside the box. Then tie the box closed with ribbon, and label it with the age and "boy" or "girl".
Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Write a Letter!
Operation Gratitude

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: All your cards and letters can be sent together in one large mailing envelope or box to:
Operation Gratitude
21100 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311-4278
ATTN: Letter Writing Program
Please include a donation form in your large mailing envelope or box.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ Care Packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Of all the items included in these packages, the most cherished are the personal letters of appreciation! Our goal is to include several letters and colorful drawings in every Care Package and tell our troops "WE CARE!" Writing a letter is a meaningful way for Americans to show support for our Military. It only takes five minutes of your day, but will bring lasting joy to our troops. Letters are accepted year-round. Right now, we have a special need for those specifically written to our New Recruits, Veterans, and First Responders. Holiday cards need to be received two to three months prior to the holidays in order for them to reach our service members on time. Once we receive letters it takes us time to screen, sort and assemble them into our care packages and then we have to factor in the shipping time. If your letters will arrive at a later date it will work well to make them general letters of appreciation so that they may be used year-round. Don't know where to start? Follow these letter writing guidelines:
  • Start with a generic salutation, such as "Dear Hero" or "Dear Brave One."
  • Express your thanks for their selfless service.
  • Avoid politics completely and religion in excess; however, saying you will pray for them is wonderful.
  • Share a little about yourself: Family, Hobbies, Work, School, Pets, Travel, etc.
  • Talk about life and interests: Sports, Weather, Music, Movies, Food, Books, etc.
  • Adults: Include your contact information (mail or email) so the letter recipient can reply. (Recipients may or may not write back; please do not be disappointed if you do not receive a response.)
  • Children's Letters: Include first names only and do not include addresses (an adult's address can be used).
  • Can't find the words? Consider drawing or painting a picture instead; please add a note to kids' drawings with their age.
  • No glitter or confetti please!
  • Do not put your individual cards or letters in envelopes-they are not needed and create a burden for our letter screeners.

Winter Break Kits
Heading Home

Date/Time: Winter Kits should be delivered by December 14. Contact Zoa Mish to schedule delivery at zmish@headinghomeinc.org, 617.935.1236

Location: Deliver kits to The Schrafft Center, 529 Main Street, Suite 100, Charlestown

Heading Home's mission is to end homelessness in Greater Boston by providing a supported pathway to self-sufficiency that begins with a home, together with critical services such as life skills, financial literacy and job training. Holiday vacation week, the time when children are off from school between Christmas and New Year's Day, is always a challenging time for our families. Beyond relying on school for child care, our families depend on school to provide two meals a day for their children. Fighting homelessness and poverty causes stress and anxiety on a daily basis as families worry about meeting basic needs. As a new holiday tradition, Heading Home would like to partner with YOU to help our families ENJOY winter break together, alleviating parents' burden and stress of providing healthy meals; entertainment; and the opportunity for creativity. These kits, supplied by our community, should be designed for four people and include a restaurant gift card, grocery gift card, passes to an activity (museum, Skyzone, movies, pottery studio, etc.) and a board game. Once the essentials are included, each kit can take on a theme by adding enhancements. Following are suggestions, and we welcome other ideas!
  • Outdoor Winter Adventure Kit: sled, hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, hats, gloves;
  • Boston Adventure Kit: T pass, Children's Museum or Legoland passes, books about Boston for kids, ice skating passes for Frog Pond (including skate rental);
  • Arts and Crafts Kit: art project kit, markers, coloring books;
  • Lego Kit: passes to Legoland, The Lego Movie DVD, Lego sets;
  • Tea Party Kit: muffin tins, muffin mix, measuring cups, icing, decorations, tea set

Date/Time: Holiday Toy Drive runs through December. Drop off donations Monday through Friday, 9:30am - 4pm. Please call the front desk at 617.859.4545 when you are five minutes away and staff will meet you outside the front of the building for curbside assistance. Location: Room to Grow, 142 Berkeley Street, Boston

  1. Register to hold a toy drive in your community.
  2. Celebrate your toy drive by sharing your stories and pictures on social media (@roomtogroworg) and using #Giveplay
  3. Donate new or nearly new toys appropriate for newborns through children age three.
  4. Purchase urgently needed toys from our Amazon wishlist.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Friday, November 10, 9am - noon

Ages: This program is for children ages 6 - 10. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Making Lunch for the Ladies
On The Rise, Inc.

Date/Time: Flexible, this opportunity is available six days a week. Meals should be dropped off between 8 - 11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate.

Time Commitment: Flexible, this can be a one-time opportunity or you may sign up for multiple shifts throughout the year.

Food Rescue Volunteers Needed
Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Inc.

Date/Time: Varies

Location: Throughout Massachusetts

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine aims to become the worlds most widely used volunteer organization for companies and individuals who wish to donate uneaten food. RLC has successfully recovered over 52,000 pounds of food, providing over 42,000 meals so far this year from their headquarters in NYC, and we are actively growing our Massachusetts branch to follow suit.

We ask our volunteers to pick up surplus food from restaurants, events and weddings and deliver it to their local shelter or soup kitchen, who will then provide this food to those experiencing hunger in Massachusetts (about 10% of our State's population). Using a model similar to businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to claim or ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time. We believe in Power in Numbers: the more people we have signed up who are willing to participate, the better our odds of fulfilling our mission to feed the hungry. We aim to grow enough volunteers to provide food rescue throughout Massachusetts 24/7. This will result in more businesses and individuals being willing to donate food, and more hungry people benefiting from this collaborative effort. Whether you're 9 or 99, travel by 4 wheels, 2 wheels or 2 feet, you can volunteer!

Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to volunteer. An adult must accompany children under age 16.

Time Commitment: There is no set time commitment: Food Pickup Volunteers will receive a notification when there is food available within 4 miles from the address provided. Each volunteer has the option to claim or ignore that pickup. Altogether, each pickup takes about 20-40 minutes to complete (picking up at Food Donor and drop off at local Soup Kitchen or Shelter), depending on logistics.

Make Housewarming Baskets for Newly Housed People
Friends of Boston's Homeless

Date/Time:  Anytime (we're helping 150 people a year move beyond homelessness into their own safe, dignified housing)

Location: Anywhere (at your school, place of worship, club, or even with friends, family, and neighbors)

It's as simple as assembling new (not used) items like cleaning supplies, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, a set of sheets or towels, in a basket to be given as a housewarming gift to someone about to move into a place of their own - many for the first time in their lives. And please include a welcome note, it will mean a lot to the person who receives it.

With a model mimicking businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to Claim or Ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time.

Nationally, the campaign provides leadership, raises awareness and advocates for change that will make sure no kid in America ever goes hungry. Locally, Share Our Strength funds the most effective anti-hunger organizations and builds partnerships that bring together public officials, nonprofits, community groups, private funders and businesses to end childhood hunger in a particular state or city. Location: Parade Grounds on the Boston Common

Children Services of Roxbury (CSR) is one of the largest, minority operated, human service providers in Massachusetts. CSR, through our four regional offices (Roxbury, Tewksbury, Worcester and Northampton), serves more than 6,000 people annually, providing high quality service and programming to economically disadvantaged children, youth, families and individuals. CSR addresses the most basic needs for food, shelter and safety, as well as family support, through promoting and strengthening healthy families and individuals, permanency placements for foster children and family unification. Making Lunch for the Ladies
On The Rise, Inc.

Date/Time: Flexible, this opportunity is available six days a week. Meals should be dropped off between 8 - 11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Monday, September 4, 9am -noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuem

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. Younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why they offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. The program provides a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Grow Extra to Share
Ample Harvest

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Your own garden or join a community garden near you
