Donors receive basic information about the family, including names and ages of the children and special needs or requests that the family might have. Out of respect for the privacy of our families and to allow them to maintain their dignity, some personal information may be withheld.

Collect new toys and gifts with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, church/synagogue, or girl scout troop. We'll provide the materials and a barrel. Add kindness to your holiday gift list! Our SHOP KIND store is open 24/7

We've talked about gratitude and "giving with purpose" before, and we know more and more Americans are favoring "experience gifts" over material items. We love this quest for less consumerism but also understand the excitement of wrapping a special gift for someone -- and the thrill of opening gifts on special occasions. That's one reason we created our SHOP KIND store. In it, we have collected products from our fabulous "kindness vendors" along with some of our favorite Amazon items. (Disclaimer: we receive affiliate dollars and a small fee from the vendors to support our awesome organization.) Whether you're seeking kindness craft kits, big-hearted books, or kindness wearables, we've got a wide variety of options to choose from this winter holiday season - or year-round!

Working within the community and through donations received from all over the country, the organization assembles and ships care packages to their adopted units every month until they return home. They currently support up to 200 units on a monthly basis. Join them as they sort, pack and box care packages for troops serving overseas. Holiday Shopping Spree
Sunday Friends

Date/Time(s):
  • Friday November 9, 6:30 - 9pm
  • Friday November 16, 6:30 - 9pm
Location: Target Store, 1811 Hillsdale Ave, San José

Sunday Friends empowers families to break the generational cycle of poverty by fostering positive development in children while educating and guiding parents to support their children's life success. This event is important because the gifts we gather during our shopping spree will make it possible for children and parents to earn, select and gift wrap presents for their loved ones in Sunday Friends' holiday programs. Join us to give the gift of giving this holiday season. We meet at the front of the store, split up into shopping teams and divide up the money collected. We assign each team a "mission" (girls' toys, teens' gifts, dads' gifts, warming presents, etc.). Each team searches the store for the best gifts. We meet back at the registers to check out and award prizes. Each shopper must bring $10 - $100 (or more). For more information about this program, visit Sunday Friends' website.

Location(s):

The purpose of SVBC is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Valet bike parking is one of many ways that Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition encourages people to bike to public events. Volunteer responsibilities include accepting event attendees' bikes, placing them on bike racks, keeping a watchful eye during the event and then happily returning them to the attendees when they are ready to leave. Perks (such as snacks, free entry, or a meal) are usually provided for volunteers, depending on the event.

Ages: Families with children eight and older are welcome to participate. Volunteers age 13-18 may participate on their own with a signed waiver. If you will be volunteering with children, the expectation is that they can be independent and support the bike parking program without needing to be supervised the entire time. You will be working together but must be able to leave them unattended at times. If you are unsure if this is an age appropriate volunteer activity for your child, please do not hesitate to contact the Community Programs Manager.

The word Seva means service. Selfless service, or Seva (a Sanskrit word), is a service which is performed with no expectation of any kind of return. Community Seva is not a religious or faith-based organization. Community Seva has been carrying out their mission of cooking and serving meals, distributing blankets during winter and hygiene kits to the homeless for nearly five years, resulting in over 65,000 meals served. Additionally, they aim to empower children, the future citizens of our world, to learn empathy and participate by making a difference that they can see. As Silicon Valley grapples with historic levels of homelessness, staying clean is part of a daily struggle for thousands of men, women & children who live on the streets and in various emergency shelters. Community Seva helps volunteers to organize a CARE Bag activity to prepare 100 care bags containing basic hygiene kits, including articles such as toothpaste, hairbrush, shampoo, lotion, etc. and distribute these to homeless individuals. This activity takes place at the sponsor's house and can be a great way to celebrate birthdays and other special days in your child's life by encouraging them to volunteer and help the needy! There is a $200 cost to sponsor the CARE Bags activity. Community Seva requests that you sign up only once a year so as to allow others to take part in the activity.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer at any of the meal Sevas.. All ages welcome to assemble CARE Bag Sevas.

November Sorting Party
Pajama Program: Bay Area Chapter

Bedtime is a vulnerable time for every child, but for millions in America, it is especially sensitive. The goal of Pajama Program is to change this part of the day with loving, magical gifts that offer a new reality. They accomplish this by gifting pajamas and books - ordinary objects that transform bedtime into a ritual of love, warmth, imagination and fun. The Bay Area Chapter's sorting party will help to sort, fold and deliver new pajamas and books to the children in need before the holiday season. Volunteers always have a great time together... and many hands make light work!

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive for Families in Need
Family-to-Family

Date/Time: At your convenience, before Thanksgiving

Location: Online

Your family can help make Thanksgiving happen for families in need. Consider making a $25 donation to purchase a turkey plus one side dish (e.g. potatoes or stuffing) for one recipient Family-to-Family family. Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Spread Some Joy - Create Greeting Cards for DOROT!

Location: Mail your cards and a Volunteer Return Form to:
DOROT
Attn: Card Making Project
171 West 85th Street
New York, NY 10024

DOROT's greeting card project helps bring joy and celebration to some of our frailest and most isolated seniors. Each month, DOROT mails over 200 birthday cards to seniors. Every card is designed and created by you, our volunteers. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Making a card is easy and fun! Whether you're looking for something to do on a rainy day, or planning an activity for your synagogue youth group, all you need is a bit of paper, a few pens, and a little imagination. Be sure to use colored paper for the outside, but white for the inside to make it easier to read.
  • The card you create should be able to fit into a 6x9 standard envelope. This is the type DOROT uses to mail out the cards to our seniors.
  • Write in large block (print) letters. As people get older, many have a hard time reading small print.
  • After you finish your cards, our office volunteers will address and mail them to seniors.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Friday, November 10, 9am - noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. But younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why we offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. At the Family Service Day on the Farm, adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and animal meet & greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. This program is a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Ages: This program is for children ages 6 - 10. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Time Commitment: Three hours

Making Lunch for the Ladies
On The Rise, Inc.

Date/Time: Flexible, this opportunity is available six days a week. Meals should be dropped off between 8 - 11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Location: 341 Broadway, Cambridge

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver to On the Rise directly. This volunteer opportunity fills one of their greatest needs by being able to offer a healthy and hearty meal to a woman who otherwise would not have many options. Don't shy away from this opportunity even if you don't consider yourself a cook; store bought and pre-made items are also welcome. As the women are as diverse as their palates, you choose what you would like to make; it is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed! Shopping, preparing and cooking these meals is a wonderful opportunity to give back with your children, as they can get involved at any age. To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate.

Time Commitment: Flexible, this can be a one-time opportunity or you may sign up for multiple shifts throughout the year.

Food Rescue Volunteers Needed
Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Inc.

Date/Time: Varies

Location: Throughout Massachusetts

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine aims to become the worlds most widely used volunteer organization for companies and individuals who wish to donate uneaten food. RLC has successfully recovered over 52,000 pounds of food, providing over 42,000 meals so far this year from their headquarters in NYC, and we are actively growing our Massachusetts branch to follow suit.

We ask our volunteers to pick up surplus food from restaurants, events and weddings and deliver it to their local shelter or soup kitchen, who will then provide this food to those experiencing hunger in Massachusetts (about 10% of our State's population). Using a model similar to businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to claim or ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time. We believe in Power in Numbers: the more people we have signed up who are willing to participate, the better our odds of fulfilling our mission to feed the hungry. We aim to grow enough volunteers to provide food rescue throughout Massachusetts 24/7. This will result in more businesses and individuals being willing to donate food, and more hungry people benefiting from this collaborative effort. Whether you're 9 or 99, travel by 4 wheels, 2 wheels or 2 feet, you can volunteer!

Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to volunteer. An adult must accompany children under age 16.

Time Commitment: There is no set time commitment: Food Pickup Volunteers will receive a notification when there is food available within 4 miles from the address provided. Each volunteer has the option to claim or ignore that pickup. Altogether, each pickup takes about 20-40 minutes to complete (picking up at Food Donor and drop off at local Soup Kitchen or Shelter), depending on logistics.

JW House

Location: 3850 Homestead Road, Santa Clara

JW House is a home away from home for families of loved ones receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. We provide warm and comfortable overnight accommodations and day use facilities for families. We are located on the Kaiser Santa Clara Campus and are open 365 days a year. Dinner is Served one of the most popular volunteer opportunities at JW House. After a long day at the hospital, our guests look forward to coming "home" to find that someone has planned, purchased the ingredients, and prepared a delicious meal just for them. Groups who participate in "Dinner is Served" soon discover that their efforts go far beyond simply supplying a dinner. As families gather for dinner, a warm sense of community exists. It is a place where families can relax with one another and check in on how another's loved one is doing. Thank you for making a difference for these families. Dinners will be needed for both Halloween and Thanksgiving as well if there is a group of families interested in hosting a holiday! Click here to learn more about the Dinner is Served program.

Holiday Shopping Spree
Sunday Friends

Date/Time:  Friday November 10 and/or Friday November 17.  Start times are 6:30pm, 7pm or 7:30pm.

Location: Target Store, 1811 Hillsdale Ave., San Jose. (Meet at front of store)

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive for Families in Need
Family-to-Family

Date/Time: At your convenience, before Thanksgiving

Location: Online

Help make Thanksgiving happen for families in need. Consider making a $25 donation to purchase a turkey plus one side dish (e.g. potatoes or stuffing) for one recipient Family-to-Family family. Or, buy a "flock of turkeys" (you choose how many) to feed more than one family.  Family-to-Family has provided turkeys and side dishes to over 24,000 families since 2003. If you currently sponsor a family through Family-to-Family, send an email at moreinfo@family-to-family.org after you donate, with your name, the name of your sponsored family and the community where they live. Family-to-Family will make sure they receive your turkey, and will let them know you've purchased it specifically for them. If you don't sponsor a family, they will donate the turkey to a family that didn't get one. Interested in learning more about sponsoring a family, click here www.family-to-family.org/sponsor-a-family/.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: It only takes a few minutes to donate online, but you and your family can use this opportunity to talk about what it would be like to not be able to afford a Thanksgiving dinner, and why it's important to you to help other families.

Volunteers should wear weather appropriate clothes and comfortable shoes, and should not bring any large bags or bulky items as Citymeals does not have storage for these items while deliveries are being made. Volunteers will deliver in pairs or small groups. Families are also encouraged to make beautiful hand-made cards and notes to include with delivered meals. Spread Some Joy - Create Greeting Cards for DOROT!
DOROT

Date/Time: Ongoing - for the Holiday Season and all year long

Location: Mail your cards and a Volunteer Return Form to:
DOROT
Attn: Card Making Project
171 West 85th Street
New York, NY 10024

DOROT's greeting card project helps bring joy and celebration to some of our frailest and most isolated seniors. Each month, DOROT mails over 200 birthday cards to seniors. Every card is designed and created by you, our volunteers. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Making a card is easy and fun! Whether you're looking for something to do on a rainy day, or planning an activity for your youth group, all you need is a bit of paper, a few pens, and a little imagination. Be sure to use colored paper for the outside, but white for the inside to make it easier to read.
Tips:
  • The card you create should be able to fit into a 6x9 standard envelope. This is the type DOROT uses to mail out the cards to our seniors.
  • Write in large block (print) letters. As people get older, many have a hard time reading small print.
  • After you finish your cards, our office volunteers will address and mail them to seniors.
Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies
