Dear New York
Food Bank for New York City

Date/Time: Ongoing project

Location: Online activities

Ages: Everyone can participate - great for both kids and adults!

Time Commitment: Varies, volunteers can receive one hour of service for every three letters sent to our Community Kitchen and Pantry.

During this challenging time, a kind note can make a huge impact! While we cannot currently accept volunteer assistance on site at our Community Kitchen, we are continuing to distribute emergency pantry bags to New Yorkers in need, and we are seeking volunteers to write brief notes to show our neighbors that we care. Thousands of clients visit our network of sites each week, so every note helps and the need is ongoing! Send one, or send a group mailed together! Since this program launched at the end of April, we have been grateful to receive over 2000 letters from volunteers across the country! We want to ensure every client can leave our Community Kitchen & Pantry with a personalized note during this difficult time, and we need more volunteer support to help make that happen! Write a brief note today to show a fellow New Yorker you care. See our online toolkit for details on how to get started. Looking for more ways to make a difference? Make a Blanket
Project Linus

Date/Time: Make blankets on your own at any time

Location: Click here to find a chapter near you

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Project Linus provides comfort to children who are sick, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gift of a handmade blanket. Our blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life, working individually or as a family or group.  No previous craft experience is required. Click here to learn how to make no-sew fleece blankets. The need for blankets continues and in fact may be greater now than ever before. However dropping blankets off at blanket drop-off sites has become more of a challenge as some stores and locations may have temporarily closed. Others that remain open may have temporarily removed our drop off bins due to COVID-19 concerns. In addition, some locations such as shelters and hospitals for which we supply blankets have placed restrictions on what our chapter coordinators can distribute to them. Please contact your local chapter coordinator to see what specific blanket needs they have before you make your blankets. Be sure to ask if they are accepting blanket donations now and if so, where they should be dropped off.
  • All blankets must be new, handmade, washable, and smoke-free
  • Materials used (fleece, fabric, yarn, etc.) should be new and odor-free.
  • All colors and patterns suitable for children are fine.
  • We accept tied fleece blankets, knitted and crocheted afghans, quilts, tied comforters, sewn receiving blankets, and any other kind of handmade blanket.
  • Please keep materials and blankets away from pets!
  • The best sizes for blankets are between 30" x 30" and 40" x 60" but we accept any blanket in sizes suitable for infants through teenagers.
Contact: Click here to find your local chapter.

#DoGoodFromHome Challenge
and 9/11 Day At Home

YSA has partnered with Design for Change and Hasbro to call on kids and teens to use their compassion and creativity to do acts of good from home. For every kind act shared through the #DoGoodFromHome Challenge, Hasbro will donate up to 25,000 toys and games to organizations providing care to the children of COVID-19 essential workers.

Check out daily activities that you can do from the safety of your home. Download this toolkit with easy instructions, podcasts and activities for your students and children. Engage kids in learning more about COVID-19 and challenge them to be changemakers in their community.

Take a picture or video, share it on social media using #DoGoodFromHome and challenge others!

YSA is also proud to partner with the 9/11 Day organization to launch 9/11 Day At Home, a nationwide day of virtual volunteering, planned for the upcoming September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. We encourage you and your school or organization to participate. Request a free toolkit now at 911DayAtHome.org.

This innovative initiative will provide a wide range of safe and relatively easy "good deeds" that your staff, constituencies, and supporters can do from home for #911Day. More than 30 nonprofits that have joined with us and 9/11 Day to help us build this amazing good deed list (to be unveiled at 911day.org on Sept 11) including our fellow national program leaders, World Central Kitchen, Points of Light, United Way, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Now more than ever we need this moment to remember the importance of unity, and inspire Americans to dedicate time to helping those most in need. That's how we all keep the promise to #NeverForget.

Coastal CleanUp Day(s)
California Coastal Commission

Date/Time: Every Saturday in September, 9am - noon

Location: Your local happy place!

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Three hours

This year, California cleans the coast by cleaning up our neighborhoods. California Coastal Cleanup is typically the third Saturday of September. This year, we are adapting to current circumstances to honor the spirit of the cleanup while maintaining strict safety precautions. For safety reasons, there are no large, centrally organized cleanup sites this year. Instead, cleanups will be self-guided and close to home. Volunteers can help by cleaning their neighborhoods, local parks, streets, and storm drains for this year's Coastal Cleanup. Trash travels through storm drains, creeks, and rivers to become beach and ocean pollution. Your family can help clean the beach by picking up litter in your community with your household. Cleanups are happening every Saturday in September. If Saturdays don't work for you, don't let that stop you! You can clean up any day, any time. All cleanups in September will be included as part of Coastal Cleanup Month. Report your cleanup to your local coordinator and/or record it on the CleanSwell app. Practice physical distancing, and strictly follow both local ordinances and this safety document. Remember, beach cleanups start at your door. Thank you for staying safe, cleaning your neighborhoods, and protecting the coast! Click here to learn more.

Contact: coast4u@coastal.ca.gov. To learn more about cleanup efforts near you, contact your local county coordinator.

Clean Up Your Neighborhood!
City of San Mateo

Date/Time: Flexible, at your convenience

Location: Your own neighborhood or local downtown.

Ages: Everyone can help!

Time Commitment: Varies

We are adapting our efforts this year for our annual cleanup. Due to the COVID-19 health orders, we are collaborating with our county partners to make it easy for San Mateo residents to organize their own neighborhood cleanup effort in September. We hope that our amazing volunteers will continue to take the initiative for cleaner neighborhoods, beaches, shorelines and boat ramp areas. For 35 years, volunteers from around the Peninsula join San Mateo's efforts to keep our shorelines free of garbage and recycling that belongs in recycling centers and landfills. Though this year will be different, we thank you for your efforts to keep San Mateo shorelines clean.

Viva Calle SJ Open Streets 2018
City of San José's Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services

Date/Time: Sunday, September 23, 8am - 4pm

Location: San José City Streets (See Map)

Viva CalleSJ is back! The City of San José's Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services will be closing down miles of San Jose streets to bring communities together to walk, bike, skate, play, and explore the city like never before. This year the route will open 6 miles of San Jose's most iconic street, Monterey Road, for residents to enjoy car-free.

VivaCalleSJ is inspired by similar Open Streets programs hosted in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Portland; Guadalajara, Mexico; and other cities around the world. The name combines the Spanish "Viva Calles," which can mean both "the streets live" and "long live the streets." VivaCalleSJ is managed by the City of San José's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services, with outreach and engagement support provided by Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. This event has been generously supported by Knight Foundation, which believes that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged. Volunteer opportunities include:
  • Outreach Champion: Help us let residents know about the program. We go door to door, letting people know what is going on and how to get engaged. With six miles of open streets route to notify, we need lots of help!
  • Hub Helper: Help set-up and manage a booth where you will pass out promotional and informational material to participants. Additionally, you will guide participants to the fun events going on at the different Activity Hubs happening along the route. Activity Hubs located along the route at this year's Viva CalleSJ include SoFA, Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, and Martial Cottle Park.
  • Route Scout: Help preserve the safety of the event by patrolling the event on a bicycle, answering questions, giving directions, and helping inform participants about Viva CalleSJ road rules.
  • Race Roadie: Help make the Run Viva CalleSJ 5K happen. Set up equipment, sign-in participants, and make sure everyone has a great day!
Ages: Volunteer opportunities are available to minors 15 and older. All ages are welcome to attend the event.

September 2017 Boston Family Volunteer Opportunities

September 2017 - Boston

Food Rescue Volunteers Needed
Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Inc.

Date/Time: Varies

Location: Throughout Massachusetts

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine aims to become the worlds most widely used volunteer organization for companies and individuals who wish to donate uneaten food. RLC has successfully recovered over 52,000 pounds of food, providing over 42,000 meals so far this year from their headquarters in NYC, and we are actively growing our Massachusetts branch to follow suit.

We ask our volunteers to pick up surplus food from restaurants, events and weddings, and deliver it to their local shelter or soup kitchen, who will then provide this food to those experiencing hunger in Massachusetts (about 10% of our State's population). With a model mimicking businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to Claim or Ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time. We believe in Power in Numbers: the more people we have signed up who are willing to participate, the better our odds of fulfilling our mission to feed the hungry. We aim to grow enough volunteers to provide food rescue throughout Massachusetts 24/7. This will result in more businesses and individuals being willing to donate food, and more hungry people benefiting from this collaborative effort. Whether you're 9 or 99, travel by 4 wheels, 2 wheels or 2 feet, you can volunteer!

Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to volunteer. An adult must accompany children under age 16.

Time Commitment: There is no set time commitment: Food Pickup Volunteers will receive a notification when there is food available within 4 miles from the address provided. Each volunteer has the option to Claim or Ignore that pickup. Altogether, each pickup takes about 20-40 minutes to complete (picking up at Food Donor and drop off at local Soup Kitchen or Shelter), depending on logistics.

Peace of Mind
Children's Services of Roxbury (CSR)

Date/Time: Saturday, Sept 23. The event is from 10am - 12:30pm. Volunteers are needed between 6am - 1pm)

Location: Parade Grounds on the Boston Common

Children Services of Roxbury (CSR) is one of the largest, minority operated, human service providers in Massachusetts. CSR, through our four regional offices (Roxbury, Tewksbury, Worcester and Northampton), serves more than 6,000 people annually, providing high quality service and programming to economically disadvantaged children, youth, families and individuals. CSR addresses the most basic needs for food, shelter and safety, as well as family support, through promoting and strengthening healthy families and individuals, permanency placements for foster children and family unification. We are looking for 200+ volunteers to help facilitate the smooth running of our Guinness World Record setting attempt for the largest human peace sign. The current record is 5,800 people, so we are shooting to get over 6,000 in attendance! Volunteers are needed to:
  • Help set up
  • Run registration tables
  • Escort VIPs
  • Most importantly, the record-setting attempt must take place in an "enclosed" environment, and thus we need volunteers to surround the massive human peace sign holding a giant rope (this method is approved by the Guinness World Record organization).
Volunteers will receive free entry on the day of the event!

Ages: Ideally volunteers will be 12 or older, but families with younger children are welcome, with adult supervision.

Make a Difference during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!
Join Alex's Lemonade Stand on the Journey to a Million

Date/Time: During the month of September

Location: Your community

Every day, parents of children battling cancer travel thousands of miles for treatments. That's why this September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Alex's Lemonade Stand is going a million miles to raise awareness and fundraise for cures. Last year, more than 12,000 people logged miles and raised money for childhood cancer research. This year they are doing it again! To find a cure for childhood cancer, we're going the distance - running, walking or biking to exceed one million miles. The goal is to collectively run, walk and/or ride one million miles during a single month: September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and fundraise to find cures. Anyone can join and there are no minimum mileage or fundraising requirements. Every mile and dollar helps!

How to Get Started:
  • Register - you can choose to start a team, join one or participate on your own.
  • Spread the word - tell your family and friends! Get them to join you, support you or donate!
  • Fundraise for the cause - you can accept online donations or hold a fundraising event. We have lots of ideas to help you.
  • Each day in September (Childhood Cancer Awareness Month), walk, run or bike at your own pace, on your own schedule, logging your miles manually or using MapMyFitness or Fitbit.
  • Your miles get added to the grand total, bringing us toward one million miles. The money you raise funds research toward finding cures.
Why One Million Miles? One million miles is 40 times around the equator or two round-trips to the moon. But it's less than five miles for each kid or adolescent who will be affected by childhood cancer this year, worldwide. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States. That's why it is vital that we raise money to cure it, now.

Ages: Everyone can participate

Coastal Clean Up Day - San Francisquito Creek
Grassroots Ecology

Date/Time: Saturday, September 16, 9am - noon

Location: 1 Alma Street, Menlo Park (at the park near the intersection of East Creek Drive and Alma Street)

Grassroots Ecology leverages the power of community volunteers to create healthy ecosystems across Silicon Valley, from the foothills to San Francisco Bay. The City of Menlo Park and Grassroots Ecology are partnering to host volunteers for Coastal Cleanup Day at San Francisquito Creek! This annual event brings communities together throughout the state to clean California's beaches, lakes, and watersheds. Volunteers will be removing trash and recyclables from our local watershed to celebrate and enhance our beautiful waterways. Please wear appropriate attire for working outdoors - long pants and sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Please "Bring Your Own (BYO)" buckets, gloves, and reusable water bottles to help reduce our footprint at the event. (There will be extras available if you don't have your own.)

Ages: All ages are welcome to volunteer. Please note that volunteers will be spreading out over a large area of the creek, therefore a responsible adult should accompany youth. Hazards typically encountered in the creek include poison oak, sharp objects, and deep pools of water. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a Grassroots Ecology waiver (to be completed through the Eventbrite website) as well as a Coastal Cleanup Day Event waiver. All adult volunteers are also required to complete a Coastal Cleanup Day Event waiver form for themselves. Waiver forms are available in English and Spanish. Although there will be Coastal Cleanup Day Event waiver forms on site on the day of the event, you can print and sign the waiver form now to expedite check in

605 East Innes St. #3263
Salisbury, NC 28145

Female jiggers can burrow into the skin and these wounds are painful, and cause difficulties for victims in daily activities such as walking, playing, and attending school. In addition to shoe making events and collections, Sole Hope holds medical clinics, and provides education and jobs for the beautiful souls of Uganda. Volunteers can help by holding a Shoe Cutting Party or by Coordinating a Collection Drive. If you're holding a shoe cutting party, start by deciding approximately how many people you're going to invite. You can then purchase the corresponding shoe cutting kit from their website. Kits come with an instructional DVD, pictures, shoe sponsorship cards, bookmarks, stickers, a pattern, and much more!
