Host a Birthday Party for Kids
CelebrateU

Location: The Henry Street Settlement, 530 Baruch Place

Ages: Sixth grade and older can volunteer on their own; fifth grade and younger can volunteer with their parents.

Time Commitment: Approximately two hours

The Celebrate U Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to spread happiness by throwing birthday parties for children in shelters or who can't afford to celebrate their birthday in the New York City area. The effect of these celebrations goes way beyond cake and party favors. Celebrate U believes that by showing children that their community truly cares about them, it can raise self-esteem, provide hope for a brighter future and empower children. Early education is essential, but so is building a child's self-esteem, giving them hope for a bright future and knowing society cares about them. And every child deserves a birthday party. Volunteers set up a birthday party with decorations, a banner and paper goods, they do an arts and crafts project with the kids, sing songs and serve cake to the children. The party celebrates any child with a birthday that month and is open to all shelter guests.  A short training session will take place for new volunteers one week prior to each event

GallopNYC is a non-profit organization based in New York City that offers therapeutic horsemanship programs to children and adults with disabilities. We serve over 500 riders a week and operate our riding program at four locations, all within NYC. Schedules at each location vary seasonally. Therapeutic horsemanship teaches the skills of horseback riding and horse knowledge to build developmental, emotional, social, and physical skills for each individual rider. Under the direction of a PATH International certified instructor, supported by trained volunteers, each rider progressively acquires riding skills and measurable improvements in life skills. Through weekly sessions, we help riders walk, talk, learn and have FUN! We also offer hippotherapy services. Therapeutic horsemanship means learning to ride a horse but it means much more - it means building a bond with a horse, learning to care for a horse, understanding how horses perceive the world and respond to people, and ultimately being a leader to a horse.

Volunteer Duties may include:
Side Walking: Assist the instructor during therapeutic riding sessions by working directly with the riders. Act as an intermediary between the rider and instructor by assisting the rider in carrying out the instructor's directions.
Lead Walking: Volunteer will lead horses during therapeutic riding classes, working with a group of side-walkers, keeping primary focus on assigned horse (and not the rider) while maintaining communication with team.

No experience is necessary. We provide all required training. Volunteers should make sure to dress in weather appropriate attire and most importantly, volunteers need to wear shoes that covers their entire foot, ideally boots.

To ease the anxiety associated with shelter living, Project Night Night distributes Night Night Packages to homeless children ages 0-10. Each Night Night Package includes an age-appropriate book, a baby blanket which can be cuddled, and a stuffed animal which can become a cherished friend. Finding comfort is vitally important for children in order to feel secure, loved, and valued - even in the midst of the upheaval and uncertainty attendant to homelessness. The mission of the Night Night Project is to provide free Night Night Packages to homeless children from birth to pre-teen who need our childhood essentials to have a concrete and predictable source of security and increased exposure to high-quality literacy materials during this time of upheaval.

Project Night Night wants your project to be as successful as possible. With that in mind, we have developed a program that allows you to benefit homeless children in your local area.
  1. Determine the number of Night Night Packages you want to complete.
  2. Order tote bags from Project Night Night at $3.50 each (this covers the cost of the tote and shipping to you)
  3. Fill each tote bag with a new blanket, book and stuffed animal.
  4. Deliver your assembled Night Night Packages to a shelter on our list or that you find. We can help! In the Bay Area, we may request that you deliver your filled totes to our local office.

Elaborate or simple, these blanket gifts are all beautiful to a child. Project Linus accepts blankets in most any size. They donate to children ages infant through teen so many sizes are appropriate. The typical size is 45"x60", though infants can use blankets as small as 36"x36" (No fringe on baby blankets please!) and teens up to 54"x72". Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers (TCV) food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. Volunteers also help sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise their boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items to struggling families. Community volunteers are the heart of the agency! Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life their vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. While volunteers assist families in Tri-City Volunteers' food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of TCV's work.

Kelley Park Winter 2018 Bio Blitz
Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful

Date/Time: Saturday March 3, 9 - 11am

Location: Kelley Park Disc Golf Parking Lot, 743 Phelan Ave., San José

A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place. Join the Kelley Park Winter BioBlitz where citizens and experts come together to explore the park, and document observations of all living things in a short period of time. Docents will guide you and teach you to use the iNaturalist app on your smartphone or tablet to record all the living things you encounter. Flowers, trees, butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, birds, and squirrels. We love them all - now let's go find them! And, if you don't want to bend over to see that spider, you can pick up a litter stick and bucket and collect the litter near the creek and in the park to keep it clean. Every little piece counts!

The Birthday Giving Project -- Birthday in a Box
Family-to-Family

Date/Time: Flexible, at your convenience

Location: Please email birthdays@family-to-family.org before you start your boxes.
If you are making five or more boxes, Family-to-Family will connect with a pantry, battered women's shelter, or a homeless shelter in your area where you can deliver them. If you make fewer than five boxes, they should be shipped to one of the impoverished communities we serve through our hunger relief program.

It's hard for many of us - adults or children - to imagine celebrating a child's birthday without a party or presents. But for many of the families served by Family-to-Family, finding the extra money to afford a child's birthday celebration is a struggle at best, and frequently impossible. You and your family can help by providing a small "party in a box" for a child in need which will also help give your children an opportunity to learn empathy in a concrete way by helping another child. Decorate and fill shoe boxes with everything needed for a small birthday party. (Or, pretty, decorated shopping bags can be used instead.) Each box goes to a different child. You can make a birthday box for one child, or you can put together multiple boxes for a group of children. If you are making multiple boxes, please make them for different ages! Learn more on the Birthday Giving Project page.

First:
Pick an age (or ages) and choose either boy(s) or girl(s) to send your box to. Find a large sneaker-sized shoe box (or use a party bag), and buy the things needed for a party. Please include:
  • Box of cake mix
  • Can of frosting
  • Birthday candles (no matches please!)
  • Wall decoration (like streamers, or a happy birthday banner)
  • Children's book for the aged child you are making the box for
  • Another ($10-$15) gift for that child.
  • If you like, you can also include a goody bag filled with small surprises
Next:
  • Wrap the book and the gift in birthday paper.
  • Wrap the top and bottom of the shoe box separately (so that even wrapped, the box can be opened), and fill the wrapped box with the things you have gathered.
  • If you would like to give the child you're giving your box to a chance to write back to you, include a postcard with a stamp on it, addressed to you, c/o Family to Family, PO Box 255, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, 10706. Then email us at birthdays@family-to-family.org, put "birthday postcards" in the subject of the email, and tell us your name and address. Also tell us that you've included a postcard in your box, so we'll be able to forward the postcard to you if we get it.
  • You can also make a birthday card to put inside the box. Then tie the box closed with ribbon, and label it with the age and "boy" or "girl".
Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Location: Meet at 438 Coleman Ave. San Jose

Host a 'Shoe Cutting Party' or Hold a Collection Drive
Sole Hope

Date/Time: Flexible

Location: Shoes and donations can be mailed to 605 East Innes St. #3263,
Salisbury, NC 28145

Sole Hope is an organization working to create a positive difference in the lives of individuals in impoverished communities of Uganda to combat diseases that enter through the feet. Jiggers are small sand fleas that live in the dust, and are found on the dirt floors in schools and the homes of many families in Uganda and other similar climates. Female jiggers can burrow into the skin and these wounds are painful, and cause difficulties for victims in daily activities such as walking, playing, and attending school. In addition to shoe making events and collections, Sole Hope holds medical clinics, and provides education and jobs for the beautiful souls of Uganda. Volunteers can help by holding a Shoe Cutting Party or by Coordinating a Collection Drive. If you're holding a shoe cutting party, start by deciding approximately how many people you're going to invite. You can then purchase the corresponding shoe cutting kit from their website. Kits come with an instructional DVD, pictures, shoe sponsorship cards, bookmarks, stickers, a pattern, and much more! You can hold a collection for simple items to help with jigger removals and to assist the Outreach House in Africa. Sole Hope will ensure they go with the next bunch of shoe uppers and medical supplies to Uganda.

Birthday Giving Project
Family-To-Family

Date/Time: Flexible

Location: Contact birthdays@family-to-family.org to ask for the name of a shelter or pantry where you can deliver the birthday boxes or call your local food pantry to ask if they accept birthday in a box donations

It's hard for many of us - adults or children - to imagine celebrating a child's birthday without a party or presents. Family-to Family's Birthday Giving Project is designed to help families by providing a small "party in a box" for a child in need, and at the same time gives children with "more" the opportunity to learn empathy in a concrete way by helping another child. You and your children can decorate and fill shoeboxes with everything needed for a small birthday party. Each box goes to a different child. If you are making a lot of boxes, please make them for different ages!

Directions:
  • Pick an age (or ages), and choose either boy(s) or girl(s) to send your box to.
  • Find a large sneaker-sized shoebox or party bag and buy the things needed for a party.
Include:
  • Box of cake mix and a can of frosting
  • Birthday candles (no matches please!)
  • Wall decoration (like streamers, or a happy birthday banner)
  • New or gently used children's book
  • Small $5-$10 gift appropriate to the age and gender of child.
  • Optional: goody bag filled with small surprises
Then:
  • Wrap the book and the gift in birthday paper.
  • Wrap the top and bottom of the shoebox separately (so that even wrapped, the box can be opened), and fill the wrapped box with the birthday items.
  • If you want to give your recipient a chance to write you back, include a stamped postcard with your name, c/o Family to Family, P.O. Box 255, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, 10706. Then email kids@family-to-family.org, put "birthday postcards" in the subject line, say you may get a return postcard, and provide your name and address.
  • You can also make a birthday card to put inside the box. Then tie the box closed with ribbon, and label it with the age and "boy" or "girl". (For example, you might write "6-7 year old boy" or "10-11 year old girl".)
  • Ship or deliver the box(es) you've assembled
