Sheltering the Unhoused
Winter Faith Collaborative

Date/Time: January 15 through end of March 2018

Location: Multiple faith communities throughout San José and Santa Clara county offer temporary overnight/daytime shelter or a safe car park for those who sleep in their vehicles. You can volunteer at either one location or multiple locations depending on your preference and time.

The Winter Faith Collaborative is an interfaith movement that was formed to share ideas and advocate for the houseless community. The Collaborative has engaged over 100 faith communities across Santa Clara county with the collective aim to serve and shelter those in the houseless community who are living outdoors. Your willingness to volunteer is critical in this community effort to shelter the unhoused and save lives this winter!

Volunteers are needed to staff the temporary shelters and safe car parks, and perform services such as providing meals for the guests, and if possible stay to eat with the them. Part of our aim is to raise awareness of who those without homes actually are. By sharing a meal with guests, volunteers quickly realize that the guests are people just like themselves who have landed in this position due to situations such as loss of a job, poor health, domestic violence, or eviction due to rent increase. Misconceptions are broken down by talking with one another over a meal. Guests are screened and it is very safe for children to participate. We have found that families with children have enjoyed helping with meal preparation, serving guests, and eating and talking with the guests. And the guests appreciate the chance to be treated with dignity and care. We encourage you to give it a try! Each location has its own rules for volunteer eligibility, but there are multiple options for serving with children. Providing a home cooked meal is usually the most needed job that children can enjoy with their families and is very appreciated by the guests.

Ages: Varies by shelter. Adult supervision is required when children are present.

Time Commitment: Varies by position

Contact: winterfaithcollaborative@gmail.com or 408.345.5351. Registration will be available online soon. Volunteer opportunities begin in mid-January and will be added throughout the spring. Please check sign-up page periodically.

Host a PJ and Book Drive!
Pajama Program - One Million Good Nights Campaign

Date/Time: Flexible

Location: Your own community

The Pajama Program is a non-profit that provides new pajamas and new books to children in need through a nation-wide network of service agencies. Winter is considered the "danger season" for children in shelter and temporary housing. Snuggling up in cozy, new pajamas with their very own new book, these children are given a secure and nurturing "good night" at bedtime. You can help by organizing a drive to gather new pajamas and books for the children who need them most.

Consider hosting a Pajama Party or Book Drive for your child's next Birthday!
  • Invite your guests to a Pajama Party (or any theme party)
  • In lieu of gifts, ask guests to bring a new pair of pajamas or a new book to donate to Pajama Program
  • Pajamas should be new/unused and a complete set or nightgown
  • Decide on an age range to collect (all ages, infant, children to age 5, children 6 - 12, teens, etc.)
  • Posters, signs and brochures can be used for invitations or to decorate the party space, and may be downloaded from the Pajama Program website.
  • Once your drive is complete, report the donation to the Pajama Program.
  • Within 7 days, Pajama Program will contact you with a receiving organization in your area that will accept the donations, and help you get the donation into the hands of the children they serve.

It's as simple as assembling new (not used) items like cleaning supplies, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, a set of sheets or towels, in a basket to be given as a housewarming gift to someone about to move into a place of their own- many for the first time in their lives.

Help A Mother Out

Date/Time: Varies

Location: Deliver to Earth Baby Warehouse, 3250 Victor St., Santa Clara

Help a Mother Out (HAMO) works to improve baby and family well-being by increasing access to diapers for families in need. Our vision is a day when every baby has a healthy supply of diapers. To host a diaper drive at your home, school or organization, just grab a box and go! All the materials you need can be found in our online diaper drive toolkit!

Annual Coat Drive
New York Cares

Date/Time: Now through December 31

Location: Donation sites are located across the city, in Police Stations, at major transportation terminals and at participating merchants. Check website for details on drop-off locations. You may also consider setting up a personal collection site/coat drive in your apartment building, church/temple, school or office. If you have more than two bags of coats to donate, please drop them off directly at the Coat Drive Warehouse. The Coat Drive Warehouse's loading dock, located at 157 West 31st Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in Manhattan will stay open through December 31. The hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30am - 4:30pm.

For the last 29 years, New York Cares has organized the city's largest winter coat drive gathering over 1.8 million winter coats. Just last year, with the help of caring New Yorkers, we collected and distributed 109,000 winter coats to families who would have otherwise faced a long cold winter without one. As the weather begins to get colder, New York Cares starts to distribute coats to Community Partners. You may donate gently used coats at any one of the public donation sites or you may start your own family coat drive. Recipients of the coats include churches, schools and shelters, all of which serve New York's most in-need populations. Adult and child-sized coats are welcomed. Learn more about the Coat Drive here.

#GetThere Transportation Fundraising Campaign
Good+Foundation

Date/Time: Now through December 31

Location: Online

A lack of transportation limits a parent's ability to take their children to school, to seek and retain a job, to visit the doctor, and to access the transformational services provided by our program partners. Two-thirds of the families Good+Foundation™ serves cannot afford basic transportation. They struggle to feed their families, pay rent and utilities, and keep up with living expenses. Using metropolitan transportation is a significant and regular drain on their limited resources. For the working poor, transit expenses often exceed 10 percent of their family budget. Basic transportation is not subsidized for the working poor or people living in poverty. This is where Good+Foundation comes in - by providing a stroller, or car seat, or transit pass, we can make traveling with children just a little bit easier. All day, every day families are forced to choose between meeting the most basic needs and getting where they need to go. Parents should not have to jump turnstiles or walk countless blocks in inclement weather to do what they need to do to earn a living and take care of their children. This holiday season, Good+Foundation is asking supporters to help provide 100 families with transportation resources (strollers, car seats, transit passes) to ensure they can get to work, provide for their families, and participate in programs that will help their families forge brighter futures. You can read here about how advocates are working for discounted transit fares for the working poor in New York City. Help support this campaign by taking a selfie using your favorite mode of transportation with our #GetThere hashtag to help Good+Foundation reach our goal of 100 families.

Winter Break Kits

Location: Deliver kits to The Schrafft Center, 529 Main Street, Suite 100, Charlestown

Heading Home's mission is to end homelessness in Greater Boston by providing a supported pathway to self-sufficiency that begins with a home, together with critical services such as life skills, financial literacy and job training. Holiday vacation week, the time when children are off from school between Christmas and New Year's Day, is always a challenging time for our families. Beyond relying on school for child care, our families depend on school to provide two meals a day for their children. Fighting homelessness and poverty causes stress and anxiety on a daily basis as families worry about meeting basic needs. As a new holiday tradition, Heading Home would like to partner with YOU to help our families ENJOY winter break together, alleviating parents' burden and stress of providing healthy meals; entertainment; and the opportunity for creativity. These kits, supplied by our community, should be designed for four people and include a restaurant gift card, grocery gift card, passes to an activity (museum, Skyzone, movies, pottery studio, etc.) and a board game. Once the essentials are included, each kit can take on a theme by adding enhancements. Following are suggestions, and we welcome other ideas!
  • Outdoor Winter Adventure Kit: sled, hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, hats, gloves;
  • Boston Adventure Kit: T pass, Children's Museum or Legoland passes, books about Boston for kids, ice skating passes for Frog Pond (including skate rental);
  • Arts and Crafts Kit: art project kit, markers, coloring books;
  • Lego Kit: passes to Legoland, The Lego Movie DVD, Lego sets;
  • Tea Party Kit: muffin tins, muffin mix, measuring cups, icing, decorations, tea set

Location: Room to Grow, 142 Berkeley Street, Boston

Now in its fifth year, Room to Grow's Annual Holiday Toy Drive collects thousands of toys for babies in low-income families. During a child's first three years, toys play a critical role in helping babies learn and grow. At every three-month visit to Room to Grow, social workers guide families in choosing five educational toys to support their baby's development, preparing them for future learning and success.

By providing educational toys to Room to Grow, you are helping babies:
  • Develop new skills such as reaching, grasping, and crawling
  • Learn colors, numbers, and shapes
  • Strengthen memory skills
Ways you can contribute:
  1. Register to hold a toy drive in your community.
  2. Celebrate your toy drive by sharing your stories and pictures on social media (@roomtogroworg) and using #Giveplay
  3. Donate new or nearly new toys appropriate for newborns through children age three.
  4. Purchase urgently needed toys from our Amazon wishlist.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Friday, November 10, 9am - noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. But younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why we offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. At the Family Service Day on the Farm, adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and animal meet & greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. This program is a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Ages: This program is for children ages 6 - 10. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Time Commitment: Three hours

Making Lunch for the Ladies
On The Rise, Inc.

Date/Time: Flexible, this opportunity is available six days a week. Meals should be dropped off between 8 - 11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Location: 341 Broadway, Cambridge

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver to On the Rise directly. This volunteer opportunity fills one of their greatest needs by being able to offer a healthy and hearty meal to a woman who otherwise would not have many options. Don't shy away from this opportunity even if you don't consider yourself a cook; store bought and pre-made items are also welcome. As the women are as diverse as their palates, you choose what you would like to make; it is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed! Shopping, preparing and cooking these meals is a wonderful opportunity to give back with your children, as they can get involved at any age. To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate.

Time Commitment: Flexible, this can be a one-time opportunity or you may sign up for multiple shifts throughout the year.

Food Rescue Volunteers Needed
Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Inc.

Date/Time: Varies

Location: Throughout Massachusetts

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine aims to become the worlds most widely used volunteer organization for companies and individuals who wish to donate uneaten food. RLC has successfully recovered over 52,000 pounds of food, providing over 42,000 meals so far this year from their headquarters in NYC, and we are actively growing our Massachusetts branch to follow suit.

We ask our volunteers to pick up surplus food from restaurants, events and weddings and deliver it to their local shelter or soup kitchen, who will then provide this food to those experiencing hunger in Massachusetts (about 10% of our State's population). Using a model similar to businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to claim or ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time. We believe in Power in Numbers: the more people we have signed up who are willing to participate, the better our odds of fulfilling our mission to feed the hungry. We aim to grow enough volunteers to provide food rescue throughout Massachusetts 24/7. This will result in more businesses and individuals being willing to donate food, and more hungry people benefiting from this collaborative effort. Whether you're 9 or 99, travel by 4 wheels, 2 wheels or 2 feet, you can volunteer!

Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to volunteer. An adult must accompany children under age 16.

Time Commitment: There is no set time commitment: Food Pickup Volunteers will receive a notification when there is food available within 4 miles from the address provided. Each volunteer has the option to claim or ignore that pickup. Altogether, each pickup takes about 20-40 minutes to complete (picking up at Food Donor and drop off at local Soup Kitchen or Shelter), depending on logistics.

Location: 3850 Homestead Road, Santa Clara

JW House is a home away from home for families of loved ones receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. We provide warm and comfortable overnight accommodations and day use facilities for families. We are located on the Kaiser Santa Clara Campus and are open 365 days a year. Dinner is Served one of the most popular volunteer opportunities at JW House. After a long day at the hospital, our guests look forward to coming "home" to find that someone has planned, purchased the ingredients, and prepared a delicious meal just for them. Groups who participate in "Dinner is Served" soon discover that their efforts go far beyond simply supplying a dinner. As families gather for dinner, a warm sense of community exists. It is a place where families can relax with one another and check in on how another's loved one is doing. Thank you for making a difference for these families. Dinners will be needed for both Halloween and Thanksgiving as well if there is a group of families interested in hosting a holiday! Click here to learn more about the Dinner is Served program.

Holiday Shopping Spree
Sunday Friends

Date/Time:  Friday November 10 and/or Friday November 17.  Start times are 6:30pm, 7pm or 7:30pm.

Sunday Friends empowers families to break the generational cycle of poverty by fostering positive development in children while educating and guiding parents to support their children's life success. Join us to give the gift of giving this holiday season. We meet at the front of the store, split up into shopping teams and divide up the money collected. We assign each team a "mission" (girls' toys, teens' gifts, dads' gifts, warming presents, etc.). Each team searches the store for the best gifts. We meet back at the registers to check out and award prizes. Each shopper must bring $10 - $100 (or more).

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive for Families in Need
Family-to-Family

If you currently sponsor a family through Family-to-Family, send an email at moreinfo@family-to-family.org after you donate, with your name, the name of your sponsored family and the community where they live. Family-to-Family will make sure they receive your turkey, and will let them know you've purchased it specifically for them. Spread Some Joy - Create Greeting Cards for DOROT!
DOROT

Date/Time: Ongoing - for the Holiday Season and all year long

Location: Mail your cards and a Volunteer Return Form to:
DOROT
Attn: Card Making Project
171 West 85th Street
New York, NY 10024

DOROT's greeting card project helps bring joy and celebration to some of our frailest and most isolated seniors. Each month, DOROT mails over 200 birthday cards to seniors. Every card is designed and created by you, our volunteers. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Making a card is easy and fun! Whether you're looking for something to do on a rainy day, or planning an activity for your youth group, all you need is a bit of paper, a few pens, and a little imagination. Be sure to use colored paper for the outside, but white for the inside to make it easier to read.
Tips:
  • The card you create should be able to fit into a 6x9 standard envelope. This is the type DOROT uses to mail out the cards to our seniors.
  • Write in large block (print) letters. As people get older, many have a hard time reading small print.
  • After you finish your cards, our office volunteers will address and mail them to seniors.
Ages: Everyone can participate

With a model mimicking businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to Claim or Ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time.

Halloween Candy Buy Back
Operation Gratitude

Date/Time: At your convenience, after Halloween. Candy should be donated prior to November 15.

Location:  Check Halloween Candy Buy Back website for buy back locations.

Plan ahead for all of that "leftover" Halloween candy! On November 1st, the piles of leftover Halloween candy may be overwhelming. You can allow your children to keep a few favorites, and consider donating the rest to a very good cause. Through the Halloween Candy Buy Back program, local dentists promise to "buy back" left over Halloween candy with prizes, toothbrushes, coupons, etc. The candy is donated to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit that sends over 100,000 care packages annually to service members stationed in hostile regions, to their children at home, and to Veterans. Their mission is simple: to put a smile on soldiers' faces and to show the appreciation and support of the American people. Consider asking your children to write a letter or draw a picture to include with your donation, as Operation Gratitude likes to include these personal notes in every care package they send.

Donate Used Halloween Costumes
Halloween Helpers

Date/Time: Collections should take place in early October. Contact Halloween Helpers for further details.

Location: Check their website for collection sites

Halloween can be one of the most important events in a young child's life. It provides lifelong memories, develops self-worth, and allows kids to play an active role in their community.  Unfortunately, many children are unable to participate in this fun, annual experience because they do not have a costume. Developed in 2008 by then 11-year-old Emma Rose Shapiro, the mission of The Halloween Helpers is to collect previously enjoyed, gently-used Halloween costumes and donate them to children in need. Visit the Halloween Helpers website for downloadable forms, handouts, and signage to begin your collection drive.

September 2017 - Boston

Food Rescue Volunteers Needed
Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Inc.

Date/Time: Varies

Location: Throughout Massachusetts

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine aims to become the worlds most widely used volunteer organization for companies and individuals who wish to donate uneaten food. RLC has successfully recovered over 52,000 pounds of food, providing over 42,000 meals so far this year from their headquarters in NYC, and we are actively growing our Massachusetts branch to follow suit.

We ask our volunteers to pick up surplus food from restaurants, events and weddings, and deliver it to their local shelter or soup kitchen, who will then provide this food to those experiencing hunger in Massachusetts (about 10% of our State's population). With a model mimicking businesses like Uber and Lyft, volunteers have the option to Claim or Ignore any notification, depending on your schedule and location at the time.

Date/Time: Saturday, Sept 23. The event is from 10am - 12:30pm. Volunteers are needed between 6am - 1pm)

Location: Parade Grounds on the Boston Common

Children Services of Roxbury (CSR) is one of the largest, minority operated, human service providers in Massachusetts. CSR, through our four regional offices (Roxbury, Tewksbury, Worcester and Northampton), serves more than 6,000 people annually, providing high quality service and programming to economically disadvantaged children, youth, families and individuals. CSR addresses the most basic needs for food, shelter and safety, as well as family support, through promoting and strengthening healthy families and individuals, permanency placements for foster children and family unification. We are looking for 200+ volunteers to help facilitate the smooth running of our Guinness World Record setting attempt for the largest human peace sign. Volunteer teams of two volunteers are needed to hold signs at "confusing" intersections along the 10, 25 and 50-mile routes. Click here for route maps. These volunteers hold bright yellow arrows to point cyclists in the right direction. All routes are well marked with arrows on the road; however, we have found that cyclists still get confused at certain intersections.

Make a Difference during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!
Join Alex's Lemonade Stand on the Journey to a Million

Date/Time: During the month of September

Location: Your community

Every day, parents of children battling cancer travel thousands of miles for treatments. That's why this September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Alex's Lemonade Stand is going a million miles to raise awareness and fundraise for cures. Last year, more than 12,000 people logged miles and raised money for childhood cancer research. This year they are doing it again! To find a cure for childhood cancer, we're going the distance - running, walking or biking to exceed one million miles. The goal is to collectively run, walk and/or ride one million miles during a single month: September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and fundraise to find cures. Anyone can join and there are no minimum mileage or fundraising requirements. Every mile and dollar helps!

How to Get Started:
  • Register - you can choose to start a team, join one or participate on your own.
  • Spread the word - tell your family and friends! Get them to join you, support you or donate!
  • Fundraise for the cause - you can accept online donations or hold a fundraising event. We have lots of ideas to help you.
  • Each day in September (Childhood Cancer Awareness Month), walk, run or bike at your own pace, on your own schedule, logging your miles manually or using MapMyFitness or Fitbit.
  • Your miles get added to the grand total, bringing us toward one million miles. The money you raise funds research toward finding cures.
Why One Million Miles? One million miles is 40 times around the equator or two round-trips to the moon. But it's less than five miles for each kid or adolescent who will be affected by childhood cancer this year, worldwide. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States. That's why it is vital that we raise money to cure it, now.

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Coastal Clean Up Day - San Francisquito Creek
Grassroots Ecology

Location: 1 Alma Street, Menlo Park (at the park near the intersection of East Creek Drive and Alma Street)

Grassroots Ecology leverages the power of community volunteers to create healthy ecosystems across Silicon Valley, from the foothills to San Francisco Bay. The City of Menlo Park and Grassroots Ecology are partnering to host volunteers for Coastal Cleanup Day at San Francisquito Creek! This annual event brings communities together throughout the state to clean California's beaches, lakes, and watersheds. Volunteers will be removing trash and recyclables from our local watershed to celebrate and enhance our beautiful waterways. Please wear appropriate attire for working outdoors - long pants and sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Please "Bring Your Own (BYO)" buckets, gloves, and reusable water bottles to help reduce our footprint at the event. (There will be extras available if you don't have your own.)

Ages: All ages are welcome to volunteer. Please note that volunteers will be spreading out over a large area of the creek, therefore a responsible adult should accompany youth. Hazards typically encountered in the creek include poison oak, sharp objects, and deep pools of water. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a Grassroots Ecology waiver (to be completed through the Eventbrite website) as well as a Coastal Cleanup Day Event waiver. All adult volunteers are also required to complete a Coastal Cleanup Day Event waiver form for themselves. Waiver forms are available in English and Spanish. Operation Backpack
Volunteers of America

Date/Time: Now through the end of August

Location: Click here for official drop-off locations around New York

More than 22,000 children live in NYC's homeless and domestic violence shelters. One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on a child's education. Each year since 2001, Volunteers of America-Greater New York has been distributing new backpacks filled with grade-specific school supplies to homeless children throughout New York City. A filled backpack relieves parents of a financial burden and provides a sense of normalcy to the otherwise chaotic lives of these children, helping them to look and feel more like their classmates. Most importantly, a filled backpack allows these children to start the school year feeling prepared and confident, with the knowledge that their education is important and that someone believes in them. Every backpack given to a child through Operation Backpack is filled with supplies according to the child's grade. All backpack and supplies are new. Consider donating a filled backpack or two. You can start a donation drive in your building, workplace, house of worship or club, or simply fill a few backpacks with your family. The Volunteers of America website provides a list of needed supplies, posters you can download for a donation drive, and other information.

Help the TCV Foodbank
Tri-City Volunteers

Date/Time: Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm

Location:  37350 Joseph St., Fremont

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. We need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help us sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise our boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items of struggling families: babies clothes are 10 for $1.00, children's clothes are 5 for $1.00 and the majority of adult clothing is marked at $0.50 or $2.00. Community volunteers are the heart of our agency. Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life our vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. While volunteers assist families in Tri-City Volunteers food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of our work.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer.

Time Commitment: Minimum of two hours
