The farm is a great place to help children understand how food is grown, about volunteering while impacting their awareness of hunger and our efforts to improve the food supply for those seeking hunger relief. No gardening experience is necessary. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Bring a water bottle, hat, sneakers and sunscreen. Gloves are available onsite. All work is outdoors and in the fields, harvest happens rain or shine so please dress accordingly. Season length can vary due to the nature of farming, so check Facebook for up-to-date openings and closings.

Back to School Backpack Drive
JFS Metrowest

Date/Time: Monday, August 21, 10am - noon, and Tuesday, August 22, 10am - noon

Location(s):
  • Wellesley Public Library, 530 Washington Street, Wellesley, August 21
  • Framingham Public Library, 49 Lexington St, Framingham, August 22
With summer flying by, it's time to start getting ready for the upcoming school year by lending a helping hand to children in the Metrowest area. This is the sixth consecutive year of the Build-a-Backpack event, where the goal is to give away 330 backpacks full of school supplies to families in our community who need them the most. Every year, JFS collects school supplies for children ages five to ten through corporate donations and local supply drives. Volunteers (often families with young children) are asked to bring new backpacks to the event where they stuff them full of school supplies, choosing who the backpack will go to, i.e. 2nd grade girl, 4th grade boy, etc. Then JFS distributes the filled backpacks to the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham as well as the parent information center for the Framingham Public Schools. Please bring a backpack or two with you.

Making Lunch for the Ladies
On The Rise, Inc.

Date/Time: Flexible, this opportunity is available six days a week. Meals should be dropped off between 8 - 11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Location: 341 Broadway, Cambridge

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver to On the Rise directly. This volunteer opportunity fills one of their greatest needs by being able to offer a healthy and hearty meal to a woman who otherwise would not have many options. Don't shy away from this opportunity even if you don't consider yourself a cook; store bought and pre-made items are also welcome. As the women are as diverse as their palates, you choose what you would like to make; it is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed! Shopping, preparing and cooking these meals is a wonderful opportunity to give back with your children, as they can get involved at any age. To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate.

Time Commitment: Flexible, this can be a one-time opportunity or you may sign up for multiple shifts throughout the year

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Monday, September 4, 9am -noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuem

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. Younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why they offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. At the Family Service Day on the Farm, adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and animal meet & greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. The program provides a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Ages: This program is for children ages 6 - 10. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Time Commitment: Three hours

Contact: humaneeducation@mspca.org, 978.687.7453. Registration is available online.  Families are also welcome to join our kids programs Facebook group! www.mspca.org/adoption-centers/nevins-farm-adoption-center/humane-education-programs-at-nevins-farm/

Honor our Service Men and Women this July 4th! Make "Cool Ties" to keep our troops cool. Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military. Operation Gratitude encourages people to knit scarves and hats for donation in winter, but in summer, their focus is on helping troops stay cool. Their website provides step by step instructions on how to make a "cool tie" which is a type of bandana filled with water-absorbent polymers that troops tie around their neck to help keep body temperature down in hot climates. The website also provides details on shipping cool ties and other donations you may want to send for care packages. It's always a nice idea to include some hand-written notes of support and encouragement to show our troops how much their sacrifice means to us.

Grow Extra to Share
Ample Harvest

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Your own garden or join a community garden near you

Do you like to garden? One out of six Americans is food insecure, meaning they don't know where their next meal will come from. No matter where you live, there are people in your community that are experiencing hunger. Food pantries help fill in the gaps but are continuously lacking in healthy, fresh produce to offer. Luckily, you can help alleviate this issue in your own neighborhood! By planting just a little extra to donate, you can improve the health of your community as well. When you donate your excess garden bounty, you are helping to relieve hunger and making an impact on obesity and other food-related diseases. Consider planting an extra row or even a few additional plants to donate to a local food pantry. And if you find yourself with a runaway zucchini plant or another bountiful crop that gives you more than you can eat, don't let it go to waste! Even a small donation will help increase food security in your area.

Ages: All ages can participate, depending on the garden or farm

Time Commitment: Varies

Contact: You can find an interested local food pantry near you on the Ample Harvest website.

Every year families from across the state and region walk together toward peace because in unity, there is healing! The Mother's Day Walk for Peace is an annual fundraiser for families across the region to honor the lives of our loved ones who have been killed, celebrate the courage of community, and sustain the Peace Institute's programs and services. The Walk benefits the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, a center of healing, teaching, and learning. Over the past twenty-one years, the Mother's Day Walk has become a time-honored tradition where families of homicide victims can honor the memory of their loved ones and neighbors can commit to creating more peaceful communities. Every year thousands of people participate including survivors, allies, business owners, elected officials, providers, the faith community, and law enforcement. We would love to have families come and volunteer for the walk. We Care Cards for Mother's Day
Catholic Charities

Date/Time: At your convenience, from home

Location: After expressing interest, the volunteer coordinator will contact you to confirm participation and provide directions for this opportunity.

Throughout the year, volunteers are needed to help provide dignity to New Yorkers in need. Last year alone, Catholic Charities served over 356,000 individuals. Cards are a simple way of communicating with someone in need. When direct service is not possible, these cards let the people we serve know that they are loved and not forgotten. Your family can send cards around significant dates such as: Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Cards can be also made around significant events, such as "Welcome to New York!" or "Good Luck on Your Interview!" Add a personal touch by including your own personal message of hope and cheer. The cards express love, support, and encouragement for those who are struggling. Help the TCV Foodbank
Tri-City Volunteers

Date/Time: Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm

Location: 37350 Joseph St., Fremont

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. We need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help us sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise our boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items to struggling families: babies clothes are 10 for $1.00, children's clothes are 5 for $1.00 and the majority of adult clothing is marked at $0.50 or $2.00. Community volunteers are the heart of our agency. Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life our vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. While volunteers assist families in Tri-City Volunteers food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of our work.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer

Time Commitment: Minimum of two hours

Contact: To learn more and to sign up for volunteer orientation, contact Gloria Lara, glara@tri-cityvolunteers.org, 510.793.4583.

Help with Flood Relief in San Jose

In February 2017, during one of the wettest winters in decades, several San Jose neighborhoods experienced severe flooding that has forced thousands of residents and businesses to evacuate their homes and caused significant damage to public and private property throughout the city. The most severe flooding has taken place in neighborhoods along Coyote Creek, which includes a number of low-income communities and mobile home parks that were submerged when Anderson Reservoir reached its capacity and began spilling into the creek. You and your family can help with flood relief efforts by raising money for the San Jose Flood Victims Relief Fund. This fund will support nonprofit organizations providing immediate and long-term relief and recovery assistance to flood victims in San Jose. Visit the Doing Good Together Fun Fundraiser project page for ideas on how you can raise money as a family.

While it will take some time to fully assess the damage caused by this emergency, we know that many families will require assistance in the weeks and months ahead. Your donation to the San Jose Flood Victims Relief Fund will help provide relief to those most in need.
Below are just a few of the organizations that will benefit from this relief fund in order to help those who need it most:
  • American Red Cross
  • Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County
  • Sacred Heart Community Service
  • The Salvation Army

Location: All your cards and letters can be sent together in one large mailing envelope or box to:
Operation Gratitude
21100 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311-4278
ATTN: Letter Writing Program
Please include a donation form in your large mailing envelope or box.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ Care Packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Of all the items included in these packages, the most cherished are the personal letters of appreciation! Our goal is to include several letters and colorful drawings in every Care Package and tell our troops "WE CARE!" Writing a letter is a meaningful way for Americans to show support for our Military. It only takes five minutes of your day, but will bring lasting joy to our troops. Letters are accepted year-round. Right now, we have a special need for those specifically written to our New Recruits, Veterans, and First Responders. Holiday cards need to be received two to three months prior to the holidays in order for them to reach our service members on time. Once we receive letters it takes us time to screen, sort and assemble them into our care packages and then we have to factor in the shipping time. If your letters will arrive at a later date it will work well to make them general letters of appreciation so that they may be used year round. Don't know where to start? Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Monday, February 20, 9am -noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. Younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why they offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. Eleven times a year (most often on a Monday holiday), adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA.

Ages:
This program is for children in grades 2-6. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Time Commitment: Three hours

To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Make Valentines and "Care Kits" for Women & Children
Sanctuary for Families

Date/Time: Valentine packages should be delivered by Friday, February 10; Care Kits may be delivered any time. Contact Emily LoBue for delivery information

Location: Valentines and Care Kits should be dropped off or sent to Sanctuary's lower Manhattan location. Please contact Emily LoBue, for location details.

Sanctuary for Families is the leading nonprofit agency in New York State dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children. Sanctuary envisions a world in which freedom from gender violence is a basic human right.

Valentine's Day can be a difficult time for victims of gender-based violence who are living in shelters. It is often a reminder of the violence that brought them to Sanctuary. Write an inspirational message, make cards, or include wrapped candy - whatever your heart desires!   Also, February is National Children's Dental Health Month. In addition to a Valentine's greeting, consider including a child's toothbrush, toothpaste and floss for the recipient to share with her children.

Sanctuary for Families is also in need of "Care Kits" for both adults and children. Care Kits consist of ziplock bags filled with basic travel-sized toiletry essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, etc). Please also add a note of encouragement and friendship to each bag!  This is a great project to do with kids on a rainy day.

Help the TCV Food Bank
Tri-City Volunteers

Date/Time: Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm

Location: 37350 Joseph St., Fremont

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. We need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help us sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise our boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items for struggling families: babies clothes are 10 for $1.00, children's clothes are 5 for $1.00 and the majority of adult clothing is marked at $0.50 or $2.00.

Community volunteers are the heart of our agency. Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life our vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. When volunteers assist families at the Tri-City food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of our work.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer

Time Commitment: Minimum of two hours

Pajama Program is a nonprofit that provides new pajamas and new books to children in need through a nationwide network of service agencies. Winter is considered the "danger season" for children in shelter and temporary housing.

Consider hosting a Pajama Party or Book Drive for your child's next Birthday!
  • Invite your guests to a Pajama Party (or any theme party).
  • In lieu of gifts, ask guests to bring a new pair of pajamas or a new book to donate to Pajama Program.
  • Pajamas should be new/unused and a complete set or nightgown.
  • Decide on an age range to collect (all ages, infant, children to age 5, children 6 - 12, teens, etc.)
  • Posters, signs and brochures can be used for invitations or to decorate the party space, and may be downloaded from the Pajama Program website.
  • Once your drive is complete, report the donation to the Pajama Program through the link on the website.
  • Pajama Program cannot provide pickup service for donations. However, within seven days they will contact you with an organization in your area that would love to take your donation. They will give you the contact name and number to arrange for a convenient time for you to drop it off.

Monday, January 16th is Martin Luther King Day of Service
"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve"

Monday, January 16th is a school and bank holiday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Instead of just making it a day OFF, make it a day ON and consider participating in a service project with your family. Many organizations provide tips, resources and hands-on opportunities to begin a conversation about social justice around the Holiday.
