Volunteers are needed to sort, box, and pack items for women and children on the outskirts of Syria who have lost everything. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty (we're in a warehouse and you'll sweat). Bring a smile, an open heart, and a work ethic! The fruits of your labor are tenfold.

Ages: All ages are welcome. Children must be supervised in the warehouse.

The Mother's Day Walk for Peace is a celebration of our potential to create more peaceful communities. Every year families from across the state and region walk together toward peace because in unity, there is healing! The Mother's Day Walk for Peace is an annual fundraiser for families across the region to honor the lives of our loved ones who have been killed, celebrate the courage of community, and sustain the Peace Institute's programs and services. The Walk benefits the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, a center of healing, teaching, and learning. Over the past twenty-one years, the Mother's Day Walk has become a time-honored tradition where families of homicide victims can honor the memory of their loved ones and neighbors can commit to creating more peaceful communities. Every year thousands of people participate including survivors, allies, business owners, elected officials, providers, the faith community, and law enforcement. We would love to have families come and volunteer for the walk. Families can help out by being "cheerleaders" along the walk to encourage and direct our walkers, or families can work at one of our tables handing out maps, buttons, flyers and fun swag!

Location: After expressing interest, the volunteer coordinator will contact you to confirm participation and provide directions for this opportunity.

Throughout the year, volunteers are needed to help provide dignity to New Yorkers in need. Last year alone, Catholic Charities served over 356,000 individuals. Cards are a simple way of communicating with someone in need. When direct service is not possible, these cards let the people we serve know that they are loved and not forgotten. Your family can send cards around significant dates such as: Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Cards can be also made around significant events, such as "Welcome to New York!" or "Good Luck on Your Interview!" Add a personal touch by including your own personal message of hope and cheer. The cards express love, support, and encouragement for those who are struggling. This is a great volunteer opportunity for young children.

Participating in our Youth Garden activities is a great way to spend time with your children while exploring the garden, learning about healthy lifestyle choices, and discovering the exciting processes of the natural world - not to mention making new friends. This is a unique opportunity to get your hands dirty and become better stewards of the environment as a family. Veggielution volunteer activities encourage exploration and play-based learning for the whole family.

Ages: Families with children ages three and up are welcome to volunteer. Families visiting the Youth Garden should have a 2:1 child to adult ratio for ages 3-6, and a 3:1 ratio for ages 7 and up.

Time Commitment: Two and one-half hours

Help the TCV Foodbank
Tri-City Volunteers

Date/Time: Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm

Location: 37350 Joseph St., Fremont

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. We need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help us sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise our boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items to struggling families: babies clothes are 10 for $1.00, children's clothes are 5 for $1.00 and the majority of adult clothing is marked at $0.50 or $2.00. Community volunteers are the heart of our agency. Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life our vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. While volunteers assist families in Tri-City Volunteers food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of our work.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer

Time Commitment: Minimum of two hours

Contact: To learn more and to sign up for volunteer orientation, contact Gloria Lara, glara@tri-cityvolunteers.org, 510.793.4583.

Volunteer blanket makers help provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans. You and your family can make easy, warm, cozy, no sew blankets to donate to children in need. Click here for blanket making instructions. Though most 'blanketeers' choose to work on their own, some organizations have hosted their own "Make A Blanket Day"' for their group.  It can be a fun team-building event and Project Linus can help you with planning and preparation.

Help with Flood Relief in San Jose

In February 2017, during one of the wettest winters in decades, several San Jose neighborhoods experienced severe flooding that has forced thousands of residents and businesses to evacuate their homes and caused significant damage to public and private property throughout the city. The most severe flooding has taken place in neighborhoods along Coyote Creek, which includes a number of low-income communities and mobile home parks that were submerged when Anderson Reservoir reached its capacity and began spilling into the creek. You and your family can help with flood relief efforts by raising money for the San Jose Flood Victims Relief Fund. This fund will support nonprofit organizations providing immediate and long-term relief and recovery assistance to flood victims in San Jose. Visit the Doing Good Together Fun Fundraiser project page for ideas on how you can raise money as a family.

While it will take some time to fully assess the damage caused by this emergency, we know that many families will require assistance in the weeks and months ahead. Your donation to the San Jose Flood Victims Relief Fund will help provide relief to those most in need.
Below are just a few of the organizations that will benefit from this relief fund in order to help those who need it most:
  • American Red Cross
  • Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County
  • Sacred Heart Community Service
  • The Salvation Army

One of the hallmarks of DGT™ is that we do more than simply offer opportunities and ideas for sharing kindness and serving others. We also expand on those experiences with important tips that help families prepare for and reflect on the unique situations they encounter during their time spent volunteering. Our newest Reflection Activities are geared specifically to the frequent topics we cover in our listings, e.g. helping the hungry and caring for animals. Look for the reflection banners in our listings to find conversation starters, book recommendations and more. And be sure to bookmark this collection of reflection offerings for easy reference during big-hearted discussions with your family.

Write a Letter!
Operation Gratitude

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: All your cards and letters can be sent together in one large mailing envelope or box to:
Operation Gratitude
21100 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311-4278
ATTN: Letter Writing Program
Please include a donation form in your large mailing envelope or box.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ Care Packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Of all the items included in these packages, the most cherished are the personal letters of appreciation! Our goal is to include several letters and colorful drawings in every Care Package and tell our troops "WE CARE!" Writing a letter is a meaningful way for Americans to show support for our Military. It only takes five minutes of your day, but will bring lasting joy to our troops. Letters are accepted year-round. Right now, we have a special need for those specifically written to our New Recruits, Veterans, and First Responders. Holiday cards need to be received two to three months prior to the holidays in order for them to reach our service members on time. Once we receive letters it takes us time to screen, sort and assemble them into our care packages and then we have to factor in the shipping time. If your letters will arrive at a later date it will work well to make them general letters of appreciation so that they may be used year round. Don't know where to start? Click here for the Write a Letter flyer.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Date/Time: Monday, February 20, 9am -noon

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. Younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why they offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. Eleven times a year (most often on a Monday holiday), adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and animal meet & greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. The program provides a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Ages:
This program is for children in grades 2-6. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Time Commitment: Three hours

Contact: humaneeducation@mspca.org, 978.687.7453. Registration is available online.  Families are also welcome to join our kids programs Facebook group!

On The Rise, Inc.

Date/Time: Flexible, this opportunity is available six days a week. Meals should be dropped off between 8 - 11am, prior day delivery can be arranged if needed.

Location: 341 Broadway, Cambridge

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver to On the Rise directly. This volunteer opportunity fills one of their greatest needs by being able to offer a healthy and hearty meal to a woman who otherwise would not have many options. Don't shy away from this opportunity even if you don't consider yourself a cook; store bought and pre-made items are also welcome. As the women are as diverse as their palates, you choose what you would like to make; it is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed! Shopping, preparing and cooking these meals is a wonderful opportunity to give back with your children, as they can get involved at any age. To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. Lunch is set up family-style in the comfy kitchen and women help themselves. Entrée should serve 15 adults; sides and dessert are optional. Fresh fruit is encouraged with lunch donations. Click here for more specific lunch preparation and delivery information.

Sanctuary for Families is the leading nonprofit agency in New York State dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children. Sanctuary envisions a world in which freedom from gender violence is a basic human right.

Valentine's Day can be a difficult time for victims of gender-based violence who are living in shelters. It is often a reminder of the violence that brought them to Sanctuary. Write an inspirational message, make cards, or include wrapped candy - whatever your heart desires!   Also, February is National Children's Dental Health Month. In addition to a Valentine's greeting, consider including a child's toothbrush, toothpaste and floss for the recipient to share with her children.

Sanctuary for Families is also in need of "Care Kits" for both adults and children. Care Kits consist of ziplock bags filled with basic travel-sized toiletry essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, etc). Please also add a note of encouragement and friendship to each bag!  This is a great project to do with kids on a rainy day.

Help the TCV Food Bank
Tri-City Volunteers

Date/Time: Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm

Location: 37350 Joseph St., Fremont

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. We need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help us sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise our boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items for struggling families: babies clothes are 10 for $1.00, children's clothes are 5 for $1.00 and the majority of adult clothing is marked at $0.50 or $2.00.

Community volunteers are the heart of our agency. Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life our vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. When volunteers assist families at the Tri-City food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of our work.

Ages: Families with children ten and older are welcome to volunteer

Time Commitment: Minimum of two hours

Location: Varies depending on delivery area and/or volunteer assignment

Host a 'Shoe Cutting Party' or Hold a Collection Drive
Sole Hope

Date/Time: Flexible

Location: Shoes and donations can be mailed to:
605 East Innes St. #3263
Salisbury, NC 28145

Sole Hope is an organization working to create a positive difference in the lives of individuals in impoverished communities of Uganda to combat diseases that enter through the feet. Jiggers are small sand fleas that live in the dust, and are found on the dirt floors in schools and the homes of many families in Uganda and other similar climates. Female jiggers can burrow into the skin and these wounds are painful, and cause difficulties for victims in daily activities such as walking, playing, and attending school. In addition to shoe making events and collections, Sole Hope holds medical clinics, and provides education and jobs for the beautiful souls of Uganda. Volunteers can help by holding a Shoe Cutting Party or by Coordinating a Collection Drive. If you're holding a shoe cutting party, start by deciding approximately how many people you're going to invite. You can then purchase the corresponding shoe cutting kit from their website. Kits come with an instructional DVD, pictures, shoe sponsorship cards, bookmarks, stickers, a pattern, and much more! You can hold a collection for simple items to help with jigger removals and to assist the Outreach House in Africa. Sole Hope will ensure they go with the next bunch of shoe uppers and medical supplies to Uganda.

Kids Helping Kids Donation or Drive
San Jose Cityteam Ministries

Date/Time: Assemble on your own schedule and drop off to the Cityteam Community Services Office in San Jose

Location: Cityteam Community Services, 1297 North 13th St., San Jose

Many kids look forward to summer vacation and a break from school. But other kids dread the summer months when they don't have school breakfasts and lunches. Usually in low-income families, the parents are working and the kids are home during the summer. Hunger doesn't take a summer vacation. Our goal is to equip these kids with Kid Approved Food Boxes that they can safely eat and enjoy. Here's how you can help:
  • Host a drive: Ask your friends, neighbors, work place, school or church to donate certain kid-friendly items from our shopping list or pick one item like macaroni and cheese or boxes of cereal that we know all kids love. Then bring your donations to Cityteam.
  • Go shopping: You can take our shopping list and purchase a few items to put together a Kid Approved Food Box and drop it off at Cityteam. This is a great project to do with kids of any age.
  • Donate online: Kids can do chores around the house and earn funds to donate. Parents can help their kids make a donation online or mail/deliver your donation to Cityteam. We would love to meet you in person and give you a tour.
  • Donate items: You can donate gently used or new kids clothing or backpacks with supplies to help kids go back to school this fall equipped with what they need to succeed.
Ages: All ages can participate in helping other kids in need!

Family-to-Family

Date/Time: Flexible

Location: Your home

As your family gets ready to go back to school, signing up for this unique, monthly, bookish service opportunity will set the stage for a year of learning and kindness. Family-to-Family is a  national nonprofit hunger and poverty relief organization dedicated to connecting, one-to-one, families with enough to share to impoverished American families with profoundly less. You and your family can sponsor a child with one book a month through Family-to-Family's One Book at a Time program. Part pen pal, part book club, the One Book at a Time program will inspire both the young readers who give the books and the ones who receive them. Family-to-Family will match you to a child living in poverty in one of the communities they serve, give you the child's name, age and reading level, and ask you to send him or her one new book, along with a letter, each month. Your family will commit to the program for one year, sending a total of 12 books and 12 letters. The child who receives the books will be encouraged to write back to you. Visit the DGT™ Feed Hungry Minds project page for reflection ideas, book suggestions, and ways to take this project further.

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: One year

Contact: Email books@family-to-family.org with your name, address and phone number and you will be matched with a child.

Add good news and good ideas to your family-focused newsletter or website!

If your organization has a newsletter or website that targets families, DGT™ can help you share kindness and service ideas with them. Once again, we've compiled a school year's worth of Service and Smiles Kindness Tips that you can dole out once a week from September 2016 through May 2017. You'll find service projects, kindness practices, and other simple ideas that teach children about giving, caring, and compassion. They're free to use with attribution to Doing Good Together, of course. Visit our Service and Smiles web page to sign up! Already signed up? Please share your stories or examples with DGT!
