This month we are beginning to update our format in order to improve the usability of our listings. Our listings are now organized first by volunteer age, starting with opportunities that are open to families with children of all ages, and then increasing by age, with the opportunities for older children towards the end of the listing. Please feel free to email Laurie with any comments or questions.
 
Food Pantry - Clothes Closet - Donation Drive Hosting
Sacred Heart Community Service

Date/Time: Flexible

Location: 1381 South First St., San José.

Ages: Children of any age can participate in hosting donation drives. Children must be nine or older to volunteer onsite in the Food Pantry or Clothes Closet.

Time Commitment: Onsite shifts vary from two to four hours.

The mission of Sacred Heart Community Service (SHCS), our May 2019 Partner of the Month, is to build a community free from poverty by creating hope, opportunity, and action. They provide essential services, work together to improve our lives, advocate for justice, and inspire our community to love, serve, and share. 

Host a Drive: This is a great option if you have younger kids! You can host a drive as a family or as a group (classroom, team, scout group, etc.) any time of year and make a HUGE impact in a family's life. A donation drive for SHCS can be general or focused on a theme: food drive, diaper drive, coat drive or basic need items. Sign up here!

Volunteering Onsite: Children must be nine years or older to volunteer onsite in the Food Pantry or Clothes Closet. Each adult that will be volunteering must fill out the online application and attend a simple orientation (with your volunteering kids). This allows you to easily schedule any future shifts and kicks off your family's partnership with SHCS. The orientation is approximately 90 minutes long and includes a group activity, age-appropriate education on social justice issues like housing, education and immigration as well as the logistics you will need to know to schedule your first shift.

Parkinson's Moving Day
Parkinson's Foundation, Inc.

Time Commitment: Up to five hours

Moving Day is an annual fundraising walk event hosted by the Parkinson's Foundation. It is a fun and inspiring fundraising event that unites families, friends and communities both large and small in the fight against Parkinson's disease. Walk for a cause and bring the whole family and join one of these annual walk-a-thons to help benefit the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. This family-friendly event features a kid's area, Tango, boxing, yoga, Tai Chi and much more!

Spring Cleaning @ Rockaway Beach, Pacifica
Pacific Beach Coalition

Date/Time: Saturday, May 4, 9 - 11am

Location: Rockaway Beach, Pacifica. Volunteers are asked to meet at the corner of North Beach Parking lot near the Best Western.

Ages: All ages are welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Two hours

The Pacific Beach Coalition is dedicated to preserving the ocean, coastal habitat, and wildlife, and ending litter through advocacy, education, community building, and citizen action. Come help the Pacific Beach Coalition clean up Rockaway Beach in Pacifica. Volunteers will comb the beach looking for trash and other harmful items.

Deliver Leftover Food & Alleviate Hunger
Peninsula Food Runners

Date/Time: Ongoing. There are weekday and weekend shifts available for mornings, afternoons and evenings.

Location: Peninsula Food Runners currently supports San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Click here for the cities we currently serve.

Ages: Families with children and groups are welcome. There must be a licensed driver with valid insurance to drive.

Time Commitment: You can volunteer for a regular weekly food run, which is a pickup and drop-off that normally requires 1 to 1-1/2 hours to complete. You can also volunteer for an occasional backup or on-call food runs.

Drivers and groups will work together to pick up excess food from restaurants, grocers, companies and deliver the food to outreach organizations that help to feed the less fortunate and homeless. Once registered, volunteers will need to pass the food safety test. After you've passed the food safety test you will be given access to all available time slots with corresponding restaurants/food pick up location.

National River Cleanup Day at Coyote Creek - San Jose
Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful

Date/Time: Saturday, May 18, 9am - noon

Location: E. Capitol Expressway, San Jose

Ages: All ages are welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 will require a parent's signature and attendance

Time Commitment: Three hours

Come out on National River Cleanup Day to help remove trash and other debris from the Coyote Creek after all the rains. This national event is your one day to join the thousands of others who care about our waterways. You'll need to wear clothes that can get muddy and sturdy boots. Community service hours are available, and groups are welcome.

Help Grow Garden Produce
Almost Eden Garden Project

Time Commitment: Two hours

The Almost Eden Garden Project grows premium-quality, organic produce for local organizations that feed homeless and low-income families and individuals. You may be weeding, digging, spreading compost, and/or planting. This is a great opportunity for families with children to learn sustainability, environmental care, and thoughtfulness towards those less fortunate. Please wear garden-appropriate shoes and clothes, and bring gloves, a reusable water bottle.

Sutro Stewards
Sutro Trail Work and Restoration Project

Date/Time: Saturday, May 4 and May 18, 9am -1pm

Location: Woods Lot, 100 Medical Center Way, San Francisco. Volunteers will receive exact location once they complete registration. Parking is free at the Woods Lot during the program.

Ages: Volunteers must be at least 14 and all minors need to be accompanied by an adult.

Time Commitment: Four hours

The mission of the Sutro Stewards is to create urban recreational opportunities while practicing sustainable habitat conservation through stewardship. Join the Sutro Stewards in trail and habitat restoration on Mount Sutro. Volunteers are needed to build trails, remove invasive species, and grow and install native plants. Volunteers meet at 9am and divide up into teams (some will tackle the trail work, others will weed planting areas and do some planting). Volunteers will work until 12:30, then break for pizza and refreshments. Sutro Stewards provides all tools and instruction.

Turn your next event into a chance to do good! Doing Good Together Family Service Fairs allow groups of all ages to serve others in a two-hour fair-style event. Attendees come together to do simple and fun hands-on projects that benefit non-profit organizations. You pick the place and date, and we can help coordinate! DGT Silicon Valley Listing Coordinator

Doing Good Together is looking for a volunteer listings coordinator to help us research and curate our monthly family-friendly volunteer listing. The coordinator:
  • Researches nonprofits in the Silicon Valley area
  • Contacts identified nonprofits, either by email and/or phone, to find out about potential family-friendly volunteer opportunities
  • Identifies 5-10 different family-friendly volunteer opportunities each month
  • Writes up the opportunities for the Silicon Valley monthly listing
  • DGT staff will help you with the steps you can take to find those opportunities, answer your questions and provide materials to help you find family-friendly volunteer opportunities in your community.
Time Commitment: Five to ten hours per month. A minimum one-year commitment is preferred.

#SpeakUpSJ Family Volunteering
Veggielution & Doing Good Together

Location: Veggielution Community Farm, 647 South King Road, San Jose

Doing Good Together™Silicon Valley and our April 2019 Partner of the Month: Veggielution are partnering together to take an action-oriented and creative approach to get families invested in the future of their city. At this #SpeakUpSJ event, families will have the opportunity to volunteer at the farm and learn how food has brought people together in the San Jose community. Families will be able to work in the garden; use food from the garden to learn how to make a new recipe; participate in a kid-friendly advocacy activity to share the importance of open spaces (parks, farms, gardens, etc.) with local leaders; create and decorate a reusable produce bag at the Farm Stand to take home; and have some fun in the tractor photo booth where you can show your pride in San Jose! We encourage you to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the outdoor tables during your visit. Families are also invited to sign up to return that evening for Neighborhood Eats; a Saturday Supper at Veggielution focused on the history of food in San Jose and discovering the best eats in East San Jose.

For the last 45 years, West Valley Community Services has served as a beacon of hope to low income and homeless families living in our community. This special volunteering program will give you an opportunity to volunteer with your family. The program will include a story and discussion about hunger or homelessness to provide some context around what the organization does and how they impact the community. Following the discussion, there will be simple volunteering activities for the family to participate in together.

Parents Place Family Fun Day

Location: Koret Family Resource Center, 200 Channing Ave, Palo Alto

Parents Place is the Bay Area's leading family resource center, and they support families and caregivers of babies, children, and teens. They offer parent and teacher workshops, coaching and consultation, services for expectant and new parents, and "baby & me" classes. They also provide behavioral and school support, clinical and special needs services, and child and family therapy. The 5th annual Parents Place Family Fun Day has over 450 families signed up so far! The Koret Family Resource Center parking lot will be converted into a Fun Zone, complete with a toddler bounce house, tasty treats, live music, face painting, and community partner booths. Parenting experts will host 20-minute mini-workshops on everything from mindfulness to tantrum tips. Volunteer duties include: face painting, helping kiddos (under 5) at the vendors booths, helping with the registration booth, giving out flyers, setting up tables and chairs, passing out stickers, and delivering water to exhibitor tables.

Through this family volunteering event, families will have fun and enjoy valuable time together while assisting the local farm. This will also be a great opportunity to enhance your connections and communications while learning about each other, doing team work, and gaining hands-on abilities.

Open your house to a pet who needs a home. When your community has dogs or cats that need extra love and care (usually because they are very young, sick, or the shelter has limited space), your family can provide a temporary home. Just Be Kind


Doing Good Together's Hunger Curriculum deepens a child's understanding of this complex issue, and it makes food drives more meaningful. Our recently released Just Be Kind Club gives parents or youth leaders the training and tools they need to lead their family or a youth group, faith group, troop, or after-school group in a variety of big-hearted lessons and activities. Our newest offering, Beyond Our Neighbors is a free resource that builds empathy in elementary-age children. Grassroots Ecology leverages the power of volunteers to create healthy lands across Silicon Valley. We restore native plants to open spaces and neighborhoods, steward creeks and watersheds, and provide hands-on nature education. Please bring a reusable water bottle and dress for outdoor work (sturdy shoes and long pants recommended). We will provide gloves and any needed tools. While volunteering with Grassroots Ecology, you will learn interesting things about the natural world while making a positive impact on the environment. Grassroots offers opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to help with planting, weeding, creek monitoring, or installing rain gardens and rain barrels.
 
Ages: All ages are welcome to participate. Children under 12 require an accompanying adult unless prior approval is obtained from the workday supervisor. All volunteers under age 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

Grab your oldest clothes and shoes and join SB Clean Creeks Coalition for a creek clean up. Their mission is to Reclaim, Restore and Revitalize our community's watershed. Many hands make this work a lighter task, so please join! Volunteers are asked to arrive by 8:45 am for a safety presentation. They will be providing trash pick-up tools, trash bags and gloves. Please bring your own water container and they will be happy to fill and refill it! Wear heavy soled shoes, long pants, hat and sunscreen.

Ages: Families with children ages 7 and older are welcome to participate. Volunteers under age 15 must be accompanied by an adult. All volunteers must complete the waiver form required by the City of San José.

Make and Donate Blankets to Children in Need
Project Linus

Project Linus has a mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers". They welcome blankets, including quilts, tied comforters, fleece blankets, crocheted and knitted afghans, and receiving blankets in child friendly colors and patterns. Blankets must be new (made of new materials), handmade and washable. You don't have to be an expert with a sewing machine, knitting needles or a crochet hook, or even know how to sew! Elaborate or simple, these blanket gifts are all beautiful to a child. Project Linus accepts blankets in most any size. They donate to children ages infant through teen so many sizes are appropriate. The typical size is 45"x60", though infants can use blankets as small as 36"x36" (No fringe on baby blankets please!) and teens up to 54"x72". Sunday Friends' Programs for Very Low-Income Families

Volunteers are needed to work directly with children, and occasionally their parents, to facilitate service and learning projects. Projects include craft gift making, healthy food preparation, letter and essay writing, hands-on science projects, math and learning games, computer education, English as a Second Language classes, reading, book report writing, exercise class, parents' classes and more. Children and parents earn tickets for their participation which are redeemable for basic necessities in our special stores. Volunteers might also assist with the banking, store setup, or shopping.
 
Ages: Eight and older. Teens, adults, families and groups are all welcome. An adult must accompany children under age 14.
 
Time Commitment: No predetermined number of hours, but if you sign up to come to a program, you are expected to come.

For over thirty years, Respite & Research for Alzheimer's Disease (RRAD) has served individuals of all stages of dementia - whether newly diagnosed or in the advanced stages. As the only dementia-specific adult daycare program in Santa Clara County, RRAD is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals affected by Alzheimer's and related conditions by providing safe, nurturing intergenerational services and a rich network of support.

As a volunteer at the Adult Day Program, you will work directly with clients and engage in fun activities, games, crafts, and meaningful conversations. Volunteers need to:
  • Fill out an online volunteer application
  • Provide documentation of a negative TB test taken within the last year
  • Attend an orientation at the center, approximately an hour in length

Volunteer Beach Clean Up at Tunitas Creek

Be part of the effort to clean and preserve Tunitas Creek Beach by joining the TLC Locals for weekend beach clean-ups. Halfway between Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, where the waters from King's Mountain reach the Pacific Ocean, lies Tunitas Creek Beach. Waters from Tunitas Creek run onto the broad, sandy beach. To the north stands an iconic sandstone cliff. Tunitas Creek Beach currently has no facilities and is only accessible via a steep, eroded trail on the property or through the environmentally sensitive Tunitas Creek corridor.

Ages: All ages welcome to participate. There are no age restrictions, however it is not recommended for toddler aged children or younger due to the challenging hike in, glass on the beach, and other dangers.

Help the TCV Foodbank
Tri-City Volunteers

Volunteers are essential to Tri-City Volunteers (TCV) food bank's daily grocery cart preparation and distribution. They need approximately 40 warehouse volunteers a day to ensure that as many as 350 client families per day receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers also help sort and hang donated clothing and attractively merchandise their boutique thrift store, which provides very low-cost items to struggling families. Community volunteers are the heart of the agency! Not only do volunteers work directly with low and very-low income families, they bring to life their vision of a community united together to ensure that every child and adult in our area is not just free from hunger, but can access pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. While volunteers assist families in Tri-City Volunteers' food bank and thrift store, they are also mentoring and deeply connecting with others. That is the real strength of TCV's work.
 
Ages: Children 10 and older are welcome to volunteer. Those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult or chaperone.

Set aside one night of Chanukah to light the menorah with an elderly client of Dorot. Together, you and your family will create a memorable and meaningful Chanukah tradition, while fulfilling the mitzvot (commandment) of lighting Chanukah candles with a homebound elder who may have no family with whom to celebrate the holiday. Your family will be assigned to an elder and you call to schedule a time to visit and deliver a care package from Dorot filled with treats, a small menorah and candles.

St. Nicholas Shopping Project - Astor Place

Despite hard work that often includes holding more than one job, many New York residents do not earn enough to pay for food, shelter, and utilities. The needs of struggling families with children, the working poor, frail seniors, and other residents in our communities continue to grow. Catholic Charities wants to help the families we serve have one less thing to worry about and ensure that they have a cheerful holiday season!

Volunteers are needed to help support the St. Nicholas Project Shopping Day. This is a fun-filled day at the Kmart in Astor Place. Volunteers will be shopping for approximately 600 families on this day. Volunteers will be asked to help us "shop" at Kmart to select winter clothing items, process these items through the Kmart registers, and load everything onto Catholic Charities trucks for delivery.

Volunteers will:
  • Shop for families (volunteers will receive a family profile and shop for winter items - Catholic Charities provides this budget). We are unable to guarantee that each volunteer will be able to shop for families (earlier shifts will have first priority).
  • Help at the cash registers
  • Bag and sort donation items
  • Load trucks
  • Provide other assistance as needed
Volunteers will be asked to assist in one or more of these areas. Kmart has changed its store layout, and we will depend on volunteers to help us with moving, bagging, and storing items.
TEAM REGISTRATION: This is a great opportunity for corporate groups, school groups, friends, and family teams. If you wish to sign-up multiple people you can create a team -- however, you must first create your own log-in to do so. Click for CREATE-A-TEAM Instructions.

Community School District 17 Feast and Talent Show
Seeds in the Middle

This is a special event held every year for families from schools in this district that spans Crown Heights, Flatbush and Brownsville, central Brooklyn. Volunteers are needed to help make and serve food, help with talent show, and bring special gifts and donations that are healthy and will make everyone happy! This event focused on children and families who come from difficult circumstances. Feel free to bring new toys, gently used toys, or clothes for any age in good condition. Please bring a delicious, fresh dish for their potluck. We are located in a food desert area, where access to fresh fruits and vegetables is limited. We may be making fresh orange juice, so children can help make that, too!

13th Annual - Mom's Christmas Stocking Campaign

D. Wendy Strauss started this project in honor of her own mother. After her Mom passed away, Wendy found a request from her mom that she continue to fill a Christmas stocking for her each year, and to give it to a woman in need. Mom's Christmas Stocking fills upwards of 200 stockings for women and children each holiday season to be distributed to shelters in NYC through Women In Need (www.women-in-need.org). Volunteers are needed to purchase stocking stuffers for women and babies and to participate on event day; filling stockings and transporting bags of filled stockings to the final location before pick up.

Suggested stocking stuffer items include:

  • Travel size toiletries, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant 
  • Feminine products
  • Jewelry
  • Hair accessories

Stockings with Care is a nonprofit partnering with homeless shelters and assistance agencies to support struggling families. The goal this year is to provide Christmas magic for 1800 kids. "Santas" receive a list with 3 Wishes for one New York City child whose family either lives in a homeless shelter or is in danger of being homeless. Santas do the shopping for their child's 3 wishes, wrap the gifts, then drop them off at the Stockings with Care Santa's Workshop (a borrowed raw space). To be a Santa for a child in need, please fill out the form and let Stockings with Care know how many children you wish to sponsor and any specific comments, such as budget limitations (the average cost of an entire wish list is $100-$150). You may also specify if you have an age or gender preference from newborns to teenagers and we will see if we can match you up. Many companies offer employee gift matching programs. Please be sure to take advantage of this if your office offers a program! Every gift makes a difference in a child's Christmas.

For each letter received through December 24th, Macy's will donate $1 to Make-a-Wish, up to $1 million. Make-A-Wish provides magical, life-changing experiences for terminally ill children and their families.

30th Annual Coat Drive

As the weather begins to get colder, New York Cares starts to distribute coats to our Community Partners. You may donate gently used coats at any one of the public donation sites (here is an interactive map of drop-off locations) or you may start your own family coat drive. All coats need to be delivered to the New York Cares warehouse located in midtown. Recipients of the coats include churches, schools and shelters, all of which serve New York's most in-need populations. Both adult and child-sized coats are welcomed.

Top Three Holiday Giving Opportunities
Family-to-Family
 
The holidays are around the corner, and this the year national poverty relief nonprofit Family-to-Family wants to make it easier than ever for families with "more" to help families with "less" celebrate the season. Family-to-Family's programs help families, veterans, seniors, Holocaust survivors and refugees in need receive food, personal hygiene products and other basic life essentials.
 
Here are three easy - yet meaningful - charitable acts that families can do together:

Help your child be a giver with Give it Up - Ask your child to give up one gift they likely would have received this holiday season for a child with less. Here is how it works - take your child shopping for the gift, or set aside one present he or she received during the holidays. Then email moreinfo@family-to-family.org with your zip code and the number of family members participating, and Family-to-Family will send you the name of a recipient organization serving families in need. We ask that you call them to arrange a time to drop off your unwrapped gift(s). Include wrapping paper, tape and ribbon too! You'll then bring the gift to the organization we linked you to and the gift will be given to a mom or dad to give to their child as if they had bought it.

Stuff a Stocking for a child or grown-up need - Let your child be a stocking stuffer this year! Bring the family on a shopping trip for adult or child stocking goodies. Adult stockings can include gloves, socks, a scarf, personal hygiene items, nail polish, a deck of cards or a Sudoku book. Stockings for kids can have a stuffed animal, mittens, travel size games and puzzles, small toys, lip gloss, pencils or a jump rope. Be creative and thoughtful. When you've finished stuffing your stocking, email moreinfo@family-to-family.org and we'll link you with either a local shelter where you can bring it, or an impoverished community where you can ship it.  Either way, an outreach worker will hand out your stocking to a mom or dad in need to give to their child, or to an adult in need! Last day to drop off stockings to a site near you is December 14.

Holiday dinner baskets for struggling families in your town - Ask family or friends to join together and make baskets or bags of holiday dinner staples for families in need. It's simple! If you're making five or more baskets, first email us at moreinfo@family-to-family.org and we'll locate and link you up with a local food pantry that will give out your baskets. Then, ask each volunteer to shop for the items on a list here: https://www.family-to-family.org/holiday-giving/holiday-dinner-baskets/. Bring groceries to a central location, in either reusable grocery bags or a laundry basket. Then, volunteers from your group can drop everything off at the pantry we've linked you with. If you're making fewer than five baskets, we ask that you google "food pantry" along with your zip code to find a nearby pantry, and contact them directly about dropping off the baskets.
 
Help Brighten the Holidays for Others - Adopt-a-Family

Do you and your family want to find an opportunity to make the holidays brighter for others? Many community organizations offer holiday food or toy programs to their clients. In partnership with SamTrans, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots, the Holiday Train is coming your way again this season! A small train decorated with thousands of lights will make its way from San Francisco to Santa Clara, stopping at each Caltrain platform for a 15 minute performance, which will include a sing-a-long from a band and choir, a snow machine blasting out onto the platform, characters in costume interacting with the crowd (Santa, Frosty, etc.) and new toy collection! Volunteers will arrive at Menlo Park station BEFORE the train arrives to assist in arranging toy collection barrels and signs. Volunteers will also direct families and guests to bins where they can donate toys and help return toys and barrels to the Salvation Army vehicles. Alum Rock Fall 2018 Bioblitz

A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place. Join this BioBlitz where you and experts come together to explore the park, and document observations of all living things in a short period of time. Docents will guide you and teach you to use the iNaturalist app on your smartphone or tablet to record all the living things you encounter. Flowers, trees, butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles, birds, and squirrels. We love them all - now let's go find them... Every little piece counts!

Save the Bay's mission is to protect and restore San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife, uniting the Bay Area to create a clean and healthy Bay. As climate change and pollution threaten the area, Save the Bay leads initiatives to make the region sustainable for future generations. With planting season in full swing for the next few months, Save the Bay will plant thousands of new seedlings from their nursery in an effort to restore critical habitat in the tidal marshes of Bair Island. Come join and lend them a hand, enjoy time taking in the beautiful landscape, and learn about the exciting changes each season brings to our local wetlands. No experience necessary. Gloves, tools and instruction provided. Each event is led by Save The Bay staff certified in first aid and CPR.

The purpose of SVBC is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Valet bike parking is one of many ways that Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition encourages people to bike to public events. Volunteer responsibilities include accepting event attendees' bikes, placing them on bike racks, keeping a watchful eye during the event and then happily returning them to the attendees when they are ready to leave. Perks (such as snacks, free entry, or a meal) are usually provided for volunteers, depending on the event.
 
Ages: Families with children eight and older are welcome to participate. Volunteers age 13-18 may participate on their own with a signed waiver. If you will be volunteering with children, the expectation is that they can be independent and support the bike parking program without needing to be supervised the entire time. You will be working together but must be able to leave them unattended at times. If you are unsure if this is an age appropriate volunteer activity for your child, please do not hesitate to contact the Community Programs Manager.

Make Blankets and Plant Flowers for the Community

At Temple Emanu-El Preschool, the child comes first. They offer a quality multi-faceted, socially and academically developmental curriculum that balances developmental, academic and Judaic learning. Students work on kindergarten readiness skills, such as ABC's and 123's, in addition to science, music, art, and more. The Temple school is community-based and open to children of all faiths. Families will work together to make blankets for the local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), non-slip socks for a nearby convalescent hospital and plant flowers for a senior center. These types of activities help children learn the value of helping others, and families can experience the importance of working with their children to better our community.

Since 2006, My New Red Shoes has worked to close the clothing gap for children and youth in-need through their "Clothing for Confidence" Program. Beyond providing the necessities of new shoes and clothing, they strive to create a long-term impact by boosting self-esteem and confidence, providing a sense of normalcy, increasing school attendance, engagement and readiness, and improving the overall educational experience and quality of life of our community's poorest students.

Each year, My Red Shoes collects thousands of new shoe donations from shoe drives led by individual donors, community groups and corporate teams. To ensure that they have the variety of shoe sizes and styles that every student requests, they supplement their inventory with wholesale shoe purchases, as needed. There are many ways to volunteer, including:

JF&CS Family Table Distribution
Jewish Family and Children's Service
 
Date/Time: Sunday, December 9 or Sunday, January 13, between two to three hours
  • 9am: If interested, participate in setting up for the food distribution. (This is for returning volunteers only).
  • 10:15-11:45am: Receive your assignment and pack and deliver groceries. You may arrive anytime during this time frame.
First time volunteers should plan on arriving at 10:15am to attend a 30-minute introductory session and orientation

Location: 1430 Main Street, Waltham
 
Family Table provides healthy food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need. Their mission is to end hunger in the Greater Boston Jewish community while serving people who need assistance, regardless of religious affiliation. Family Table fulfills its mission by providing Kosher food, creating a caring Jewish connection, and empowering people to make healthy eating a part of their daily lives. Family Table serves more than 100 towns across Greater Boston, the North Shore, and the South Area. Currently, Family Table is helping more than 500 families each month with groceries and connections to other services. Volunteers are needed to help with packaging and delivering food orders to recipient families. Packing will take approximately 30 - 45 minutes. Your delivery location will not be more than 30 minutes from your hometown but not in your hometown for confidentiality reasons. The clients know that you are just dropping off the food and not visiting.

Ages: All ages are welcome and encouraged to volunteer when accompanied by an adult.
 
Time Commitment: Two to three hours depending on the activity.

Making Lunch for the Ladies

For the homeless women at On The Rise, a healthy and hearty meal enjoyed in a safe home is invaluable. They rely on the kind hearts and culinary talents of volunteers to cook a meal in their kitchen and deliver the meal to On the Rise. This volunteer opportunity fills one of their greatest needs by being able to offer a healthy and hearty meal to a woman who otherwise would not have many options. Don't shy away from this opportunity even if you don't consider yourself a cook; store bought and pre-made items are also welcome. As the women are as diverse as their palates, you choose what you would like to make; it is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed! Shopping, preparing and cooking these meals is a wonderful opportunity to give back with your children, as they can get involved at any age. To respect the privacy of the women, volunteers do not serve lunch at On The Rise. The women self-serve lunch; please package lunch buffet or family style (no individually wrapped items). Join Community Servings during the holiday season to help deliver holiday meals to individuals and families living with critical illnesses across Boston. This is a perfect opportunity for the whole family to bring some holiday cheer to Community Servings clients! Volunteers will need to deliver baskets in their own vehicle. Please note the following requirements:
  • Must have a vehicle and valid driver's license.
  • Must volunteer with a friend or partner - deliveries must be made by a minimum of two people. (Only 1 person required to register.)
  • Must have a clean car with ample storage. (Preferably a cargo van or SUV.)
  • Must have a cellphone.
  • Navigation (Google Maps, Waze) or a good sense of direction.
  • Willingness to deliver/pickup to/from Greater Boston suburbs.
Ages: Families are welcome to participate. Adult supervision is required for those under 18.

Now in its fifth year, Room to Grow's Annual Holiday Toy Drive collects thousands of toys for babies in low-income families. During a child's first three years, toys play a critical role in helping babies learn and grow. At every three-month visit to Room to Grow, social workers guide families in choosing five educational toys to support their baby's development, preparing them for future learning and success.
 
By providing educational toys to Room to Grow, you are helping babies:
  • Develop new skills such as reaching, grasping, and crawling
  • Learn colors, numbers, and shapes
  • Strengthen memory skills
Ways you can contribute:
  1. Hold a toy drive in your community.
  2. Celebrate your toy drive by sharing your stories and pictures on social media (@roomtogroworg)

Cradles to Crayons offers families the opportunity to teach their children the values of service and philanthropy while volunteering together to help children and families in need. A volunteer shift in The Giving Factory Warehouse involves hands-on processing of the donated goods that flow in on a regular basis. Each station in the warehouse includes inspecting, sorting, and packaging donations to ultimately be distributed to the children served by Cradles to Crayons. Fill up your car, turn on your GPS and away you go! Pie in the Sky raises money to provide free, medically tailored and nutritional meals for Greater Boston's critically ill and their families. Community Servings provides meals to over 1,600 people each week.

JF&CS Family Table Distribution

Family Table provides healthy food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need. Their mission is to end hunger in the Greater Boston Jewish community while serving people who need assistance, regardless of religious affiliation. Family Table fulfills its mission by providing Kosher food, creating a caring Jewish connection, and empowering people to make healthy eating a part of their daily lives. Family Table serves more than 100 towns across Greater Boston, the North Shore, and the South Area. Currently, Family Table is helping more than 500 families each month with groceries and connections to other services. Volunteers are needed to help with packaging and delivering food orders to recipient families. Packing will take approximately 30 - 45 minutes. Your delivery location will not be more than 30 minutes from your hometown but not in your hometown for confidentiality reasons. The clients know that you are just dropping off the food and not visiting.

Ages: All ages are welcome and encouraged to volunteer when accompanied by an adult.

Help Sort and Pack Holiday Care Packages
Operation: Care and Comfort

Location: Avaya Stadium, 1123 Coleman Avenue, San José. Free parking will be available at the back of the stadium. Head to the stadium and sign in at the registration table.
 
Operation: Care and Comfort (OCC) provides support and comfort to "adopted" units of deployed U.S. military service members, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other conflict regions. Working within the community and through donations received from all over the country, the organization assembles and ships care packages to their adopted units every month until they return home. They currently support up to 200 units on a monthly basis. Join them as they sort, pack and box care packages for troops serving overseas. The troops overseas do not have the comforts of home, so mailing care packages filled with snacks, hygiene and leisure items bring them a touch of home. Be sure to wear your Santa hats and garb, and join the fun for the year's last public packing event. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
 
Ages: Families with children ages 5 and older are welcome to volunteer, but anyone under 16 must be supervised by an adult.

Sunday Friends empowers families to break the generational cycle of poverty by fostering positive development in children while educating and guiding parents to support their children's life success. This event is important because the gifts we gather during our shopping spree will make it possible for children and parents to earn, select and gift wrap presents for their loved ones in Sunday Friends' holiday programs. Join us to give the gift of giving this holiday season. We meet at the front of the store, split up into shopping teams and divide up the money collected. We assign each team a "mission" (girls' toys, teens' gifts, dads' gifts, warming presents, etc.). Each team searches the store for the best gifts. Volunteers must wear gloves and eye protection for their safety. Also, please make sure to bring sunblock, water, and hats.

The Young Scholars Program supports underserved students who have participated in the Family Connections preschool program for at least one year and are entering Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten. After preschool, the Young Scholars program sustains positive family dynamics and learning opportunities for kindergarten and beyond so that participating students and their families have the tools and resources to become the drivers of their own success and leaders in their extended communities. Volunteers are needed to mentor and support Young Scholars Program participants.

Organized by HandsOn Bay Area and sponsored by The Walt Disney Company, this day of service helps families strengthen bonds to their communities and each other. This year, HandsOn Bay Area is partnering with Collective Roots, and activities will include installing a trellis system, building a small compost box, and painting terracotta pots. With only one grocery store for a population of 30,000 people, much of East Palo Alto is considered a Low Access Community by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Collective Roots serves as an important space for community members to learn about growing food, as well as providing garden plots for East Palo Alto residents who don't have access to gardening space. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you are comfortable getting dirty/painted.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. IRC is gathering welcome kits for newly arrived families, asylees and victims of Human Trafficking. Welcome kits offer refugees with primary sets of necessities upon their arrival and also increases their efficiency in distributing goods to their clients. The welcome kits include items, such as basic kitchen necessities, personal hygiene items, bedding, and cleaning supplies. Furthermore, donating a completed kit increases the staff's efficiency in distributing these goods to newly arrived refugees. The purpose of SVBC is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Valet bike parking is one of many ways that Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition encourages people to bike to public events. Volunteer responsibilities include accepting event attendees' bikes, placing them on bike racks, keeping a watchful eye during the event and then happily returning them to the attendees when they are ready to leave. Perks (such as snacks, free entry, or a meal) are usually provided for volunteers, depending on the event.
 
Ages: Families with children eight and older are welcome to participate. Volunteers age 13-18 may participate on their own with a signed waiver. If you will be volunteering with children, the expectation is that they can be independent and support the bike parking program without needing to be supervised the entire time. You will be working together but must be able to leave them unattended at times. The Family Giving Tree fulfills the exact holiday wishes of those children in the most need in our communities while inspiring the values of kindness, philanthropy and volunteerism. Interested in volunteering during the Family Giving Tree's Holiday Wish Drive? They are always looking for people who want to have fun, are passionate about their work and love giving back to the community. The warehouse is a flurry of activity in December for the Holiday Wish Drive. Family Giving Tree relies on groups and individual volunteers to help set up the warehouse space, receive donations, sort and prepare donations, quality check donated products, help load agency cars, and clean up the warehouse space. Tasks will be assigned when volunteers arrive at the warehouse depending on most pressing needs at that time.

The word Seva means service. Selfless service, or Seva (a Sanskrit word), is a service which is performed with no expectation of any kind of return. Community Seva is not a religious or faith-based organization. Community Seva has been carrying out their mission of cooking and serving meals, distributing blankets during winter and hygiene kits to the homeless for nearly five years, resulting in over 65,000 meals served. Additionally, they aim to empower children, the future citizens of our world, to learn empathy and participate by making a difference that they can see. As Silicon Valley grapples with historic levels of homelessness, staying clean is part of a daily struggle for thousands of men, women & children who live on the streets and in various emergency shelters. Community Seva helps volunteers to organize a CARE Bag activity to prepare 100 care bags containing basic hygiene kits, including articles such as toothpaste, hairbrush, shampoo, lotion, etc. and distribute these to homeless individuals. This activity takes place at the sponsor's house and can be a great way to celebrate birthdays and other special days in your child's life by encouraging them to volunteer and help the needy! There is a $200 cost to sponsor the CARE Bags activity. Community Seva requests that you sign up only once a year so as to allow others to take part in the activity.

For these children who don't know a loving home environment, or who live unstable lives in unsafe situations, the treasured bedtime ritual most of us grew up with is unknown. The goal of Pajama Program is to change this part of the day with loving, magical gifts that offer a new reality. They accomplish this by gifting pajamas and books - ordinary objects that transform bedtime into a ritual of love, warmth, imagination and fun. The Bay Area Chapter's sorting party will help to sort, fold and deliver new pajamas and books to the children in need before the holiday season. Volunteers always have a great time together... and many hands make light work!

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Manhattan Church of Christ opens its doors to serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal to the homeless. All shifts are family-friendly and involve a set-up team to set tables and decorate, a service team to run trays of food back and forth to the guests, and a break down & clean up team.

Last year, the Thousand Turkey Challenge collected and distributed nearly 1400 turkeys for WSCAH clients. The goal for this year is 1500 turkeys. Since 2001, FeedingNYC has been connecting with families in need throughout New York City. Each year, FeedingNYC hand delivers nearly 3,000 Thanksgiving dinners. Each box contains one turkey, stuffing, gravy, vegetables, juices and dessert. Thanksgiving dinners are delivered to families who are in partnership with Women in Need, Jewish Federation, Catholic Charities and City Harvest. Join over 300 volunteers in this hands-on opportunity. Financial donations are also welcome through the Adopt A Box program sponsored by Manhattan Mini Storage.
 
Ages: Everyone is welcome to volunteer. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by adult and have a signed waiver.

Volunteers are needed to donate nutritious, nonperishable canned or packaged foods. Needed items include: canned tuna, salmon and chicken, dried milk, beans, fruit, vegetables, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, 100% fruit juice.

On Thanksgiving morning, they need even more help - and volunteers with cars are in demand. Can't volunteer on Thanksgiving? Consider decorating holiday bags or birthday cards! God's Love We Deliver provides a birthday cake to all clients celebrating a special day.  You and your kids can create birthday cards to be included in these deliveries. Deliver Meals to Homebound Elderly

The heart of the City Meals on Wheels program is the hand-delivery of nutritious meals to homebound elderly. Meal recipients look forward to these essential meals; the personal visits that come with them help brighten their days. Meal delivery is done on foot, within walking distance of a senior center, rain or shine (seniors are counting on these meals).

Volunteers should wear weather appropriate clothes and comfortable shoes, and should not bring any large bags or bulky items as Citymeals does not have storage for these items while deliveries are being made. Volunteers will deliver in pairs or small groups. 

NOTE: Families are also encouraged to make beautiful hand-made cards and notes to include with delivered meals. The Volunteer Coordinator can email you a template and guidelines.
 
Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to participate but volunteers age 16 and under require adult supervision.

This Fall, She's the First is expecting hundreds of bake sales to happen between November 1st and 30th during their 9th Annual Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off. Sign up online to add yourself to the map of people who plan to have bake sales at their school, office, club or girl/boy scout troop, fundraising to send girls to school with She's the First. 30th Annual Coat Drive
New York Cares

Date/Time: Coat Drive will officially kick off in mid-November
 
Location: Donation sites are located across the city, in Police Stations, at major transportation terminals and at participating merchants. Check website for details on drop-off locations. You may also consider setting up a personal collection site/coat drive in your apartment building, church/temple, school or office.
 
It is never too early to start collecting coats for the New York Cares Coat Drive. As the weather begins to get colder, New York Cares starts to distribute coats to Community Partners. You may donate gently used coats at any one of the public donation sites or you may start your own family coat drive. All coats will need to be delivered to the New York Cares warehouse located in midtown. Recipients of the coats include churches, schools and shelters, all of which serve New York's most in-need populations. Adult and child-sized coats are welcomed. If you don't have any coats to donate, you can Text-to-Give and donate $20 to buy a coat for a New Yorker in need.  Text the word COAT to 41444.

DOROT's greeting card project helps bring joy and celebration to some of our frailest and most isolated seniors. Each month, DOROT mails over 200 birthday cards to seniors. Every card is designed and created by you, our volunteers. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Making a card is easy and fun! Whether you're looking for something to do on a rainy day, or planning an activity for your synagogue youth group, all you need is a bit of paper, a few pens, and a little imagination. Be sure to use colored paper for the outside, but white for the inside to make it easier to read.
  • The card you create should be able to fit into a 6x9 standard envelope. This is the type DOROT uses to mail out the cards to our seniors.
  • Write in large block (print) letters. As people get older, many have a hard time reading small print.
  • After you finish your cards, our office volunteers will address and mail them to seniors.

Volunteers are needed to work directly with children, and occasionally their parents, to facilitate service and learning projects. Projects include craft gift making, healthy food preparation, letter and essay writing, hands-on science projects, math and learning games, computer education, English as a Second Language classes, reading, book report writing, exercise class, parents' classes and more. Children and parents earn tickets for their participation which are redeemable for basic necessities in our special stores. Volunteers might also assist with the banking, store setup, or shopping.
 
Ages: Eight and older. Teens, adults, families and groups are all welcome. An adult must accompany children under age 14.
 
Time Commitment: No predetermined number of hours, but if you sign up to come to a program, you are expected to come.

Volunteer at the 4th Annual Harvest Festival

Volunteers are needed to support the Fourth Annual Harvest Festival at Martial Cottle Park. The event will include farm tours, pumpkin painting and carnival activities, historical ranch activities, food vendors, live music, a corn maze, fresh produce for sale, square dancing, face painting, and much more! There are many special event volunteer positions to choose from including set up, tear down, activity stations and more. All volunteers should bring a water bottle, sunscreen and hat. Snacks for volunteers will be available, but please bring a lunch or money to purchase lunch from the food vendors.

Volunteer at the 9th Annual "Day on the Bay" Multicultural Festival

Close to 12,000 people attend Day on the Bay every year to enjoy activities rich in diversity and talent, and rich in ethnic expression. The event will take place from 10am - 3pm, but volunteers are needed in the morning for set up, running various parts of the event, and tear down. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers! This fun-filled festival along the South Bay shores of Alviso features a health resource fair and a festive celebration of our diverse cultures. Other activities will include free pumpkins for kids, music, entertainment, free kayak rides, free hamburgers and veggie burgers, and, of course, the Cortese Zucchini Car Derby!

The purpose of SVBC is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Valet bike parking is one of many ways that Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition encourages people to bike to public events. Volunteer responsibilities include accepting event attendees' bikes, placing them on bike racks, keeping a watchful eye during the event and then happily returning them to the attendees when they are ready to leave. Perks (such as snacks, free entry, or a meal) are usually provided for volunteers, depending on the event.
 
Ages: Families with children eight and older are welcome to participate. Volunteers age 13-18 may participate on their own with a signed waiver. If you will be volunteering with children, the expectation is that they can be independent and support the bike parking program without needing to be supervised the entire time. You will be working together but must be able to leave them unattended at times. If you are unsure if this is an age appropriate volunteer activity for your child, please do not hesitate to contact the Community Programs Manager.

The Almost Eden Garden Project grows quality organic produce for local organizations that provide meals and services for homeless and low-income families. During our harvesting seasons (late summer and early winter), weekly deliveries are made to St. Anthony's Dining Room in Redwood City and to the South Palo Alto Food Closet. Garden tasks may include laying wood chips on walking paths, planting seedlings, weeding, digging and amending garden beds, trimming and/or turning compost bins. Be prepared to get dirty, bring your own reusable water bottles, and wear closed-toe shoes please!

Halloween Candy Buy-Back

Plan ahead for all of that "leftover" Halloween candy! On November 1st, the piles of left-over Halloween candy may be overwhelming. You can allow your children to keep a few favorites, and consider donating the rest to a very good cause. Through the Halloween Candy Buy-Back program, local dentists promise to "buy back" leftover Halloween candy with prizes, toothbrushes, coupons, etc. The candy is donated to Operation Gratitude, a non-profit that sends over 100,000 care packages annually to service members stationed in hostile regions, to their children left behind, and to Veterans. Their mission is simple: to put a smile on soldiers' faces and to show the appreciation and support of the American people. If you cannot find a local dentist who is participating in the Halloween Buy-Back program, Operation Gratitude will accept donations of unopened packages directly. Their website provides important packaging and shipping information. Consider asking your children to write a letter or draw a picture to include with your donation, as Operation Gratitude strives to include these personal notes in every care package they send.

Celebrate U believes that by showing children that their community truly cares about them, it can raise self-esteem, provide hope for a brighter future and empower children. Early education is essential, but so is building a child's self-esteem, giving them hope for a bright future and knowing society cares about them. And every child deserves a birthday party. A short training session will take place for new volunteers one week prior to each event.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every family has been touched by cancer in some way, and many have been touched by breast cancer. Teach your kids about the importance of fundraising for cures and to support programs, and enjoy a fun day of walking in the park. We all walk together, but the event is not a race. Stop whenever you want or need to. You absolutely do not need to complete the entire walk if you are unable. The walk concludes when the final walker crosses the finish line. Our walk is 4 miles and it starts at the 72nd Street Bandshell area. The walk will head up East Drive within Central Park until 102nd Street. We head back down to 72nd Street on West Drive. The walk takes place within Central Park and the route is friendly for strollers, walkers, canes, etc.

JF&CS Family Table Distribution
Jewish Family and Children's Service
 
Date/Time: Sunday, October 21 or Sunday, November 18, between two to three hours
  • 9am: If interested, participate in setting up for the food distribution.
  • 10:15-11:45am: Receive your assignment and pack and deliver groceries. You may arrive anytime during this time frame.
First time volunteers should plan on arriving at 10am to attend a 30-minute introductory session and orientation.

Location: 1430 Main Street, Waltham
 
Family Table provides healthy food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need. Their mission is to end hunger in the Greater Boston Jewish community while serving people who need assistance, regardless of religious affiliation. Family Table fulfills its mission by providing Kosher food, creating a caring Jewish connection, and empowering people to make healthy eating a part of their daily lives. Family Table serves more than 100 towns across Greater Boston, the North Shore, and the South Area. Currently, Family Table is helping more than 500 families each month with groceries and connections to other services. Volunteers are needed to help with the following tasks:
  • Setting up the pantry
  • Packaging and delivering food orders to recipient families
Packing will take approximately 30 - 45 minutes. Your delivery location will not be more than 30 minutes from your hometown but not in your hometown for confidentiality reasons. The clients know that you are just dropping off the food and not visiting.

Ages: All ages are welcome and encouraged to volunteer when accompanied by an adult.
 
Time Commitment: One to three hours depending on the activity. Volunteers can arrive at 9am to help with setup.

Boston Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes

This is the American Diabetes Association's largest fundraising walk in New England. The money raised from this event goes towards the American Diabetes Association's mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. In order to run this event, the American Diabetes Association needs volunteers to ensure a smooth day of event experience for the participants. Roles vary, including set-up, clean up, greeting, registration, cheering, rest stop, helping at tents, and more. There is something for everyone!

Fresh, clean socks (and underwear!) are vital for people's health, warmth, comfort, and dignity and the least donated item to people in greatest need. The shelters we support give out over 8,000 pairs of socks each year. By participating in Operation Sock Drop you not only help keep our community's neediest, most vulnerable citizens safe, warm, and healthy, but you'll them help maintain their dignity and comfort during this most difficult time in their lives. Friends of Boston's Homeless supports the Woods Mullen Women's Shelter and the 112 Southampton Men's Shelter in the South End. These shelters serve over 800 homeless individuals every day. To get started, just download this flyer and share with everyone you'd like to participate.

You and your family can help people who've spent years living on our streets and in shelters feel warmth and excitement as they move into their new place and get started on their new lives by providing the essential items we all need to make our house a home. By assembling and donating Housewarming Baskets, you'll be an important part of welcoming people into their new homes where they'll find the stability and serenity they need to begin their journey to hopeful, peaceful futures. It's as simple as assembling new (not used) items like cleaning supplies, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, a set of sheets or towels, in a basket to be given as a housewarming gift to someone about to move into a place of their own- many for the first time in their lives.

And please include a welcome note, it means a lot to the person who receives it.

Community Toiletry Drives
Run a community toiletry drive to collect everyday hygiene essentials like shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste to make sure youth have basic items they need to stay clean and feel empowered. Drives can be done just about anywhere - at your school, in your neighborhood, at your place of worship, or even at a local business.
Well-Wish Cards for Kids
Spread smiles by sharing your art and words of encouragement! Cards you make will be distributed alongside Hope and Comfort's basic hygiene kits, which go out to young people in need. Small cards can be made on a half-sheet or folded sheet of construction paper; get as creative as you'd like! Each card should feature a drawing and/or a quick positive message.
Hope and Comfort Birthday Party
Make your next birthday party even more special - for both you and someone in need! Have a Hope and Comfort birthday party by asking friends and relatives to bring new hygiene items to your party instead of (or along with!) presents. Boston Heart Walk
American Heart Association

Date/Time: Saturday, September 8, shifts available 6:30am - 2:30pm. Please register here to select your shift. Check in is at the Volunteer Tent, located to the left of the stage near the start line.

The Boston Heart Walk is the American Heart Association's premier event in the Greater Boston Area, bringing together 8,000 people from the community each year. The event raises money to fund cardiovascular research and education, advocate for health, and save lives. Your enthusiasm and dedication help make our events fantastic and we would love to have you volunteer with us! Volunteer opportunities include directing walkers, manning water stops, working the healthy snacks tent, overseeing our heart obstacle course, and a variety of other tasks! Tasks begin at 6:30am with set-up and conclude around 2:30pm with breakdown. Your task will be assigned to you upon arrival to the event. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt!

Ages: All ages are welcome to volunteer. Anyone under 18 will need a parent/guardian to sign a waiver.

9/11 Remembrance Service Day in Lowell
The Mission Continues

On Saturday, September 15th, join veterans and community volunteers as we report for duty in tribute to the 17th anniversary of 9/11/01. For this year's National Day of Service, our Massachusetts service platoons will partner with Mill City Grows to support urban farming efforts at the Big Farm in Lowell. Volunteers are needed to help with preparing the farm for ongoing harvesting, planting orchard trees and pollinator flowers, landscaping, weeding, and more. This is a family-friendly event, and we will have music, snacks, and an afternoon lunch for all participants. Come out and make a difference with us in Lowell!

Room to Grow provides parents raising babies in poverty with one-to-one parenting support and essential baby items throughout their children's critical first three years of life. Parents receive developmental information, customized support, and all of the needed baby items to ensure a healthy and secure start for their child. You and your family can help make a difference in the lives of babies being raised in poverty by crafting playmats for Room to Grow clients.

Ride for Food Public Safety Volunteers
Three Squares New England
 
Date/Time: Sunday, September 23, two to three-hour shifts between the hours of 7:30am and 12:30pm as Public Safety Volunteers to direct cyclists in the right direction.
 
Location: Towns on the route include Dedham, Needham, Dover, Sherborn, Millis, Medway, Holliston, Westwood and Norfolk. Specific times and locations will be provided at a later date (after police have confirmed their details).

The mission of Three Squares New England (TSNE) is to eliminate food insecurity through building out the capacity of local area hunger relief organizations by assisting with fundraising, visibility and community engagement. TSNE organizes an annual charity bike ride, the Ride for Food, to raise money for local food pantries, kitchens, community farms and food rescue organizations. Volunteer teams of two volunteers are needed to hold signs at "confusing" intersections along the 10, 25 and 50-mile routes. Click here for route maps. These Public Safety volunteers hold bright yellow arrows to point cyclists in the right direction. All routes are well marked with arrows on the road; however, we have found that cyclists still get confused at certain intersections.
 
Ages: Youth ages 12 and older can participate with a parent or guardian.

2018 Walk to End Alzheimer's Greater Boston Walk

Location: DCR's North Point Park in Cambridge

The Greater Boston Walk will be held on September 23 at DCR's North Point Park in Cambridge. Families can volunteer in one of the following three areas:
  • Children's Activities: Help with a variety of activities that may include, games, face painting, crafts, etc.
  • Promise Garden: Help hand out color-coded Promise Garden flowers to Walk participants to personalize, and then display them during the pre-Walk ceremony.
  • Water stops: Hand out water along the Walk route to participants and cheer them on.

National Public Lands Day

Enjoy the beauty of Minute Man National Historical Park while you volunteer at the North Bridge. The area around the bridge is a breathtakingly gorgeous slice of scenic splendor. We need your help to maintain this historically and naturally significant space. Activities will include raking trail sediment, seeding, clearing sediment from around the trail, erosion control, and general trail maintenance. Tools (including rakes, trowels, and shovels) will be provided. Work is appropriate for participants of all ages.

Make a Difference during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!

Turn awareness into action by joining The Million Mile, the largest childhood cancer awareness challenge that funds researchers so they can find better treatments and more cures for kids battling cancer. Whether you are a casual walker or jogger, an avid cyclist or marathoner, YOU can make a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer. To show support for and bring awareness to Childhood Cancer Month, participants of all ages will walk, run or cycle as many miles as possible all month long while raising money to help kids with cancer. Our goal is to collectively walk, run or ride a million miles during the month of September. Anyone can join and there are no minimum mileage or fundraising requirements. Every mile and dollar helps!

How to Get Started:
  • Register - you can choose to start a team, join one or participate on your own.
  • Spread the word - tell your family and friends! Get them to join you, support you or donate!
  • Fundraise for the cause - you can accept online donations or hold a fundraising event. We have lots of ideas to help you.
  • Each day in September (Childhood Cancer Awareness Month), walk, run or bike at your own pace, on your own schedule, logging your miles manually or using MapMyFitness, Fitbit, or Strava.
  • Your miles get added to the grand total, bringing us toward one million miles. The money you raise funds research toward finding cures.

5th Annual Ride to End Homelessness

With more than 40 years of service and experience in successfully serving homeless families and individuals, LifeMoves is the largest and most effective nonprofit committed to ending the cycle of homelessness for families and individuals in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. LifeMoves programs combat homelessness today - and tomorrow - by teaching comprehensive life skills that help clients achieve long-term self-sufficiency, and effectively break the cycle of homelessness. Join LifeMoves in a community ride to raise critically-needed funds to support the high-impact housing programs and services they provide. Families are invited to participate in a 10-mile ride or take on the challenge of a 40-mile ride. All riders will receive a delicious lunch cooked by the LifeMoves NextGen Advisory Board. There will be other events during the day, such as yoga, a guest speaker, and lunch. Check in for the 40-mile ride (route) will start at 8:00am and check in for the 10-mile ride (route) will start at 9:30am. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs on event day:
  • Aid station & rest stop set-up (with LifeMoves signage and brochures)
  • Chalking route and posting signs/balloons at turns
  • LifeMoves signage and LifeMoves Banner
  • Starting area, table, and stretch area set-up
  • Ride direction assistance (making sure the riders are following the designated route)
  • Check-in/registration & parking assistance

The purpose of SVBC is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Valet bike parking is one of many ways that Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition encourages people to bike to public events. Volunteer responsibilities include accepting event attendees' bikes, placing them on bike racks, keeping a watchful eye during the event and then happily returning them to the attendees when they are ready to leave. Perks (such as snacks, free entry, or a meal) are usually provided for volunteers, depending on the event.
 
Ages: Families with children eight and older are welcome to participate. Volunteers age 13-18 may participate on their own with a signed waiver. If you will be volunteering with children, the expectation is that they can be independent and support the bike parking program without needing to be supervised the entire time. You will be working together but must be able to leave them unattended at times. If you are unsure if this is an age appropriate volunteer activity for your child, please do not hesitate to contact the Community Programs Manager.

Grab your oldest clothes and shoes and come join us for a creek clean up. We have a mission to Reclaim, Restore and Revitalize our watershed. Many hands will make this work a lighter task. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 8:45 am for a safety presentation. We will be providing trash pick-up tools, trash bags, gloves. On the third Saturday in September California cleans up! Be a part of over 1,000 inland and coastal cleanups all over the state. California Coastal Cleanup Day welcomes more than 60,000 volunteers who pick up hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables from beaches, lakes, and waterways each year. This amazing day brings awareness to the marine litter problem and provides a community event for direct involvement. Help the Coastal Commission by joining in the fight to preserve wildlife by taking trash out of the environment. Plan to spend a day outside connecting with your community to celebrate California! The Campus Community Association, celebrating more than 35 years as a non-profit public benefit corporation, was organized to promote neighborhood spirit and improve the quality of life in the downtown community through education, awareness, group projects, volunteerism and community care. Bark in the Park™ is a fundraising event hosted by the Naglee Park neighborhood's Campus Community Association (CCA). All proceeds benefit local community organizations and pet-related charities including Humane Society Silicon Valley and San Jose Animal Care Center. Bark in the Park™ is the largest dog festival in the U.S. This event is free, open to all, with a suggested donation of $5 per adult. Dogs and kids under 12 are free! Low-cost vaccines and microchipping will be provided by Pet Awareness and Welfare Society (PAWS) for San José Animal Care and Services. Volunteers are needed to help with setup on Friday evening prior to the event and cleanup on Saturday evening after the event is over.

Ages: Volunteer opportunities are available to minors under 16, if they are accompanied by an adult. All ages are welcome to attend the event.

Lytton Gardens Senior Communities

Lytton Gardens is a not-for-profit residential and health care facility serving the elderly of the Mid-Peninsula. This is the first HUD (US Department of Housing and Urban Development) financed assisted living project in the US and sets a standard in accommodating the changing needs of lower income seniors. Lytton services over 550 seniors at any given time through their independent living apartments, licensed community care apartments and their Health Care Center. Join the residents at Lytton Gardens in a fun hour of Bingo, or other engaging activities to help cultivate an environment of independence and personal fulfillment for the residents.

September is Hunger Action Month, and Second Harvest Food Bank invites you and your family to a special Family Food Sorting volunteer opportunity. To ensure safety and sanitation standards are met, you must follow these dress code requirements: closed toe shoes, long pants, and no tank tops.

Ages: Ages 8 and up are welcome. Families must register individually, with a maximum group size of seven. There must be at least one adult with the family, with a ratio of 1 adult to every 3 minors (8-17). Please review the expectations for parents and guardians during the Family Sort. All adults 18 and up must fill out a Volunteer Agreement Form, and for all children under 18, a parental/guardian permission form must be filled out.

Viva Calle SJ Open Streets 2018

Viva CalleSJ is back! The City of San José's Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services will be closing down miles of San Jose streets to bring communities together to walk, bike, skate, play, and explore the city like never before. This year the route will open 6 miles of San Jose's most iconic street, Monterey Road, for residents to enjoy car-free.

VivaCalleSJ is inspired by similar Open Streets programs hosted in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Portland; Guadalajara, Mexico; and other cities around the world. The name combines the Spanish "Viva Calles," which can mean both "the streets live" and "long live the streets." VivaCalleSJ is managed by the City of San José's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services, with outreach and engagement support provided by Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. This event has been generously supported by Knight Foundation, which believes that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged. Volunteer opportunities include:
  • Outreach Champion: Help us let residents know about the program. We go door to door, letting people know what is going on and how to get engaged. With six miles of open streets route to notify, we need lots of help!
  • Hub Helper: Help set-up and manage a booth where you will pass out promotional and informational material to participants. Additionally, you will guide participants to the fun events going on at the different Activity Hubs happening along the route. Activity Hubs located along the route at this year's Viva CalleSJ include SoFA, Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, and Martial Cottle Park. 
  • Route Scout: Help preserve the safety of the event by patrolling the event on a bicycle, answering questions, giving directions, and helping inform participants about Viva CalleSJ road rules.
  • Race Roadie: Help make the Run Viva CalleSJ 5K happen. Set up equipment, sign-in participants, and make sure everyone has a great day!
Ages: Volunteer opportunities are available to minors 15 and older. All ages are welcome to attend the event.

Canary Challenge 2018

The Canary Challenge is a fully supported bike ride, offering a 5km walk/ride/run, 50km, 50-mile, 75km, and 100-mile rides. The rides cater to all levels of cycling strength - from children to fixed gear bikes and tandems, to time trial champions. All proceeds of the Canary Challenge benefit the Canary Foundation, the world's first nonprofit focused solely on early cancer detection. The Canary Foundation is based on a results-only business approach that focuses on cross-disciplinary collaborations and partnerships with renowned researchers, scientists and global institutions such as the Canary Center at Stanford and the Center of Excellence at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center -two centers that the Canary Foundation was instrumental in creating. Volunteers are needed! All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, food and beverages on the day of the event. The event usually gets 200+ volunteers who are able to assist with first-aid, check-in, greeting, cleanup and other tasks!

Ages: Teens ages 13 to 14 may volunteer with a parent. Teens 15 and older are welcome to volunteer on their own. All ages are welcome to attend the event.

The Big Wave Farm was created to provide a place people to come learn about organic gardening, chicken care, and build community to support people with disabilities. Volunteers are needed to assist in setup and/or breakdown for the upcoming Annual Harvest Festival, a hallmark event at the Big Wave Project. It promises to be a fun-filled autumn celebration for the entire family, so you can volunteer AND join us for the festivities! Look forward to: pumpkin decorating, flower arranging, water balloon toss, pie-eating contest, an old-fashioned cake walk, silent auction, cork pull, live music, dancing and much more! You'll also have a chance to visit the chickens, check out the harvest, and purchase a perfect Halloween pumpkin from Big Wave Farm's bountiful pumpkin harvest.

The mission of There With Care is to provide a wide range of thoughtful and fundamental services to children and families during the critical phase of a medical crisis. They serve families referred by medical agencies, by building a network of services and people who ease the burden of life's day-to-day obligations with compassion and care.
You can participate by caring for families in various ways, including:
  • Deliveries of food and care packages. (An adult must be the primary volunteer, but children are welcome to accompany them on deliveries. Completion of an online application, in-person training, and online background check is required.)
  • Assisting with warehouse organization and inventory processes.
  • Helping with community events.
  • Working on administrative tasks and special projects.
  • Creating Family Care Kits, hosting Team Bake Chop, Food Bank Shopping, coordinating a drive for needed items, and more.
  • By request, a group project can be hosted at a location of your choice.
Ages: Children and youth of any age must be accompanied by an adult, and can participate in almost all volunteer experiences, including deliveries to families.

Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP Cares) partners with the local KIWANIS club to host a "Wednesday Night Meal" at the Saint Francis of Assisi Church. This FREE meal is an open-invitation to anyone in the community who needs a nourishing, hot meal. Volunteers are needed to help with meal preparation, meals service, and clean-up. EHP has served families in need in our community for over 43 years. They provide free emergency food, clothing, household essentials, furniture, support programs and referral services to individuals and families in need in the community.

Ages: Ages six and older are welcome with an adult present. Teens can volunteer with parental consent.
 
Time Commitment: Flexible. Volunteers may work the entire time or part of the time, as they are available.

Join the rockstar team of volunteers at the annual American Diabetes Association Walk, Run, Ride Fundraiser, the 2018 Tour de Cure. This is a huge event with over 1,000 participants so they need YOUR help! Approximately 200 volunteers are needed to help with set up, registration, lunch, and many more roles. Volunteers will receive a 2018 commemorative volunteer t-shirt and complimentary lunch ticket.

Ages: Recommended for ages 10 and up, but we can accommodate younger volunteers (with parents) if spots for kid-friendly duties are still available.

Ages: Families with children ages 5 and older are welcome to volunteer. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult and minors under 18 are allowed with a signed waiver.

Tunitas Creek Beach Clean-Up

Tunitas Creek Beach is a hidden gem to the South of Half Moon Bay that, due to its secluded and challenging location, has been pretty badly polluted by visitors. Volunteers are needed for their monthly clean-ups to keep this beach beautiful and its sea life safe and healthy. TLClocals is a movement to strengthen local communities through community projects, fundraising, small business support, and local classes & workshops. Tunitas Creek Beach Clean-Ups are organized in partnership with San Mateo County, CalTrans, Pacifica Beach Coalition and Heirs to Our Oceans.

Ages: There are no age restrictions, however it is not recommended for toddler aged children or younger due to the challenging hike, glass on the beach, and other dangers.

Location: Santa Cruz Riverwalk, between Soquel Avenue and Laurel Street Bridges. Directions will be provided upon registration.

Join Coastal Watershed Council staff in making a difference in the lower San Lorenzo River. Volunteers will help with caring for native plants as they grow and create habitat along the river. While you are at the river, take a closer look at the willows, alders, evening primrose and mugwort native to the watershed. Listen to the calls of bushtit and warbler over the babble of the lower river, and learn about this unique river ecosystem. Volunteers should dress in comfortable gardening clothes, including long pants, socks, and sturdy shoes. Please bring sun protection and a reusable water bottle.

Late Summer Wonders: An Evening Hike at Arastradero

Join Grassroots Ecology for a unique opportunity to see Arastradero Preserve during the evening and see what late summer wonders there are to discover. Participants should expect to stay for the entire duration of the hike. Bathroom access will be available at the start and end of the hike. Please bring: a flashlight (bring one with a red filter or red tape if possible), a reusable water bottle, dinner or snack. Dress for hiking, rain, and cold nighttime temperatures (sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants, and layers are recommended).

Ages: All ages are welcome to participate. Children under 12 require an accompanying adult and minors under 18 who are not accompanied by an adult require a parent to approve the online waiver when registering for this event.

The mission of Our City Forest is to cultivate a green and healthy Silicon Valley by engaging community members in the appreciation, protection, growth and maintenance of the urban ecosystem, especially our urban forest here in Silicon Valley. Over the past year, Our City Forest has planted over a dozen trees in the new 2-acre site located within Martial Cottle Park. There are plenty of opportunities to build and maintain an ever-increasing number of projects here! Bring water (re-usable containers encouraged), snacks, sun protection, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Closed-toed shoes are required.

Summer Streets 2018

Date/Time: Saturday, August 4, 11 and 18 from 6am - 1pm. There are two shifts:
  • 6 - 10am
  • 10am - 1pm
Location: Summer Streets runs from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. There are five different volunteer locations:
  • Location 1 - Foley Square (Brooklyn Bridge to Canal St. along Lafayette St.)
  • Location 2 - SoHo (Canal St. to Houston St. along Lafayette St.)
  • Location 3 - Astor Place (Houston St. to 14th St. along Lafayette St.)
  • Location 4 - Midtown (15th St. to 42nd St. along Park Ave.)
  • Location 5 - Uptown (43rd St. to 60th St. along Park Ave.)
From the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, seven miles of streets will be closed to cars for six hours to allow walkers, runners, cyclists and people of all ages to take back the streets and enjoy many free activities along the route. It takes a lot of people to ensure these great events run smoothly. Enjoy Summer Streets from a different perspective as a part of the Summer Streets team and help inspire participants to climb rock walls, fly down zip lines and water slides, enjoy music, games and many other activities and help direct and inform people to ensure they have a great day.
 
Ages: Volunteers must be 16 years old to participate on their own; children are welcome with parent or guardian

Join Supplies for Success, UJA-Federation of New York's initiative and help pack backpacks with new school supplies for children in need. Each year, UJA provides brand new filled backpacks to thousands of disadvantaged children through UJA-Federation beneficiary agencies, schools, shelters, and other local organizations. The goal of Supplies for Success is to ensure that all children in need return to school with the tools they need to succeed.

Alternative Summer Break for Teens
GOOD+ Foundation
 
Date/Time: Tuesday - Thursday, August 28 - 30, 10am - 1pm. We ask that the volunteers complete all three days of the Youth Alternative Summer Break Program due to the service learning component. There will be a 30-minute lunch break each day. High school volunteers will receive certificates verifying community service hours upon completion of the program.

Founded by Jessica Seinfeld, GOOD+ Foundation™ (formerly Baby Buggy) is a nonprofit organization that partners with a national network of leading programs to break the cycle of family poverty through the power of donated child products and life-changing family services. GOOD+ Foundation grants donations of products and services to programs that have demonstrated a capacity to address family poverty in three focus areas: supporting new mothers, investing in early childhood and engaging fathers. Volunteers will be sorting, screening, and processing children's clothing, accessories, books, and toys based on real time needs, in order to prepare clothing to go out to local families in the NYC Metro Area.

Volunteer with Seniors
City Meals of Wheels
 
Date/Time: Ongoing, all year round
 
Location: Meal delivery and friendly visiting occurs in seniors' homes throughout New York City; other volunteer opportunities can be done from your home.

City Meals funds 31 community-based agencies that bring weekend, holiday and emergency meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers who can no longer shop or cook for themselves. In addition, the Mobile Food Pantry program delivers weekly bags of grocery staples to the most at-risk elderly and our Fresh Produce program enables us to supplement regular meal deliveries with fresh fruit and vegetables from local farmers. Volunteers are needed to help with the following programs:

Friendly Visiting:
The friendly visiting program brings together our meal recipients with kind-hearted people who want to help homebound seniors stay connected with the outside world. This social visit becomes so important in the lives of our lonely elderly. The time commitment for this program is one hour per week for at least six months. The visiting schedule is arranged between you and the senior.
Meal Delivery:
The heart of our program is the hand-delivery of nutritious meals to homebound elderly. Meal recipients look forward to these essential meals; the personal visits that come with them help brighten their days. Each weekend, teams and individual volunteers help deliver meals from meal centers across the city. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens on weekends and select locations on weekdays.
Senior Chat:
This program lets caring volunteers connect with isolated, elderly individuals by phone once a week. A weekly phone call can go a long way to help homebound seniors feel safe and connected to the world. Calls typically last about a half hour and can be made from the volunteer's home or office. The time commitment for this program is six months.
Handmade Greeting Cards:
Each year, hundreds of students from local public and private schools - ranging from pre-kindergarten to universities - decorate cards for their homebound elderly neighbors to be delivered with either meals or food packages. Last year they created 69,793 cards.  There is a template on the website, along with further information.
Kitchen Volunteers:
During the weekday, volunteers help package food to be delivered to homebound elderly as well as serve meals to seniors at the meal center.

Operation Backpack

More than 22,000 children live in NYC's homeless and domestic violence shelters. One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on a child's education. Each year since 2001, Volunteers of America-Greater New York has been distributing new backpacks filled with grade-specific school supplies to homeless children throughout New York City. A filled backpack relieves parents of a financial burden and provides a sense of normalcy to the otherwise chaotic lives of these children, helping them to look and feel more like their classmates. Most importantly, a filled backpack allows these children to start the school year feeling prepared and confident, with the knowledge that their education is important and that someone believes in them. Every backpack given to a child through Operation Backpack is filled with supplies according to the child's grade. All backpack and supplies are new. Consider donating a filled backpack or two. You can start a donation drive in your building, workplace, house of worship or club, or simply fill a few backpacks with your family. The Volunteers of America website provides a list of needed supplies, posters you can download for a donation drive, and other information.

Intergenerational Chess - Fall Registration Now Open

Student volunteers and DOROT Seniors will get to know each other and play chess together. Chess Masters will demonstrate different strategies at each session. Share your love of the game and bring a smile to a senior! Refreshments will be served. Students must be in 6th-12th grade and understand the game of chess, the different chess pieces and how to move them.

Themed Party at a Family Shelter
Heading Home

Location: Shelters are located in Dorchester, Roxbury or Medford

Heading Home is one of the largest providers of shelter for homeless families and individuals in the Commonwealth. Our mission is to end homelessness in Greater Boston by providing a supported pathway to self-sufficiency that begins with a home, together with critical services. Volunteers are needed to host themed parties for children living at one of our seven family congregate shelters. Children in our family programs love the chance to meet and play with volunteers! Heading Home will give you suggested themes for your party, as well as a checklist of what volunteers are expected to bring. Volunteers provide dinner and utensils, dessert, an activity (and materials necessary), as well as small toys/gift bags for the children to keep. We can provide you with names and ages of kids living in the shelter up to two weeks in advance of your party. Decorations are suggested but not required. Volunteers should expect to spend between $150 - $300.

Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to participate, but parents should consider the maturity of their children before volunteering. All volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Meal-Serving at a Local Emergency Shelter for Individuals

Heading Home is one of the largest providers of shelter for homeless families and individuals in the Commonwealth. Our mission is to end homelessness in Greater Boston by providing a supported pathway to self-sufficiency that begins with a home, together with critical services.
Volunteers are needed to cook and serve a meal for the 22 clients living in our emergency shelter in Cambridge. Once you've finished serving, sit down and enjoy some time with the residents! Volunteers provide breakfast or dinner foods and drinks. Heading Home will provide an overview of what volunteers are expected to prepare and bring.

Back to School Backpack Drive
JFS Metrowest

With summer flying by, it's time to start getting ready for the upcoming school year by lending a helping hand to children in the Metrowest area. This is the seventh consecutive year of the Build-a-Backpack event, where the goal is to give away 275 backpacks full of school supplies to families in our community who need them the most. Every year, JFS collects school supplies for children ages five to ten through corporate donations and local supply drives. Volunteers (often families with young children) are asked to bring new backpacks to the event where they stuff them full of school supplies, choosing who the backpack will go to, i.e. 2nd grade girl, 4th grade boy, etc. Then JFS distributes the filled backpacks to the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham as well as the parent information center for the Framingham Public Schools. Please bring a backpack or two with you.
 
Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Very flexible. The event runs for two hours but time needed will depend on how long it takes for your family to pack the backpack you bring.

Family Service Day on the Farm!
The MSPCA at Nevins Farm

Location: The MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen

Many children want to help animals on a farm, but the MSPCA requires children to be 16 or older to work with the animals. But younger kids can also experience what it's really like to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty on a farm - cleaning cages and mucking stalls! That's why we offer the MSPCA at Nevins Farm's "Family Service Day" series. At the Family Service Day on the Farm, adult-child pairs are able to participate as hands-on volunteers at the MSPCA. Each group participates in three activities: an animal care chore, support chores, and an educational presentation that includes a fun activity and animal meet & greet. Animal care chores include cleaning cat cages, walking gentle dogs, or mucking horse stalls. This program is a fun and educational opportunity for families to make a meaningful contribution to the MSPCA's animal care efforts.

Ages: This program is for children in grades 2 - 6. Each child must attend with a parent or adult guardian.

Our JDRF One Walk weekends would not be possible without the support of our amazing volunteers. By being a JDRF One Walk Volunteer, you are not only helping ensure our Walkers have the best experience on Walk day, but you are also helping JDRF create a world without type 1 diabetes! Below please find the volunteer sign-up form and a list of volunteer job descriptions. We ask that you register as a volunteer no later than one week prior to the Walk you are attending so JDRF staff can plan accordingly and ensure all areas are covered. JDRF staff will be in touch with you prior to event weekend with more details.
 
Ages: Children under 13 are more than welcome to volunteer with their parents at water stops and as route cheerleaders. Other volunteers must be at least 13 years of age and all volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
