Give Thanks by Giving Back

Give Thanks by Giving Back

There is so much going on in the world that it can feel overwhelming at times. Research shows that people are struggling with anxiety and depression in part because of world events, financial stress, and a lack of purpose.

Now, more than ever, it is imperative that as we enter this season of gratitude we take the time to reflect on the goodness in our lives, whatever that may be. We may have a healthy family, a safe place to live, and plenty of food on the table, but it's important to remember that not everyone shares in that experience. Whether due to health, financial difficulties, illness, or conflict, many of us do or will face challenges at some point in our lives.

One way to simultaneously show gratitude and address anxiety, depression, and lack of control is by doing something positive. This Thanksgiving season let’s challenge one another to give thanks by giving back. Together, we can spread kindness, compassion, and generosity to make a difference in the world.

With gratitude,

– MiaLisa Millares, Executive Director

ACTIONS

Adopt a Food Shelf
One of the easiest ways to help people in need is to donate to a local charity or food bank. These organizations work tirelessly to provide food, clothing, and other resources to those who need it most. You can adopt a food shelf and donate non-perishable items such as canned goods and clothing or make a financial donation. Many food banks also have volunteer opportunities, so consider giving your time to help sort and distribute donations.

Sponsor a Family
Many organizations run programs where you can sponsor a family by providing them with food and clothing. Otherwise, the family may not be able to afford these things. It's a wonderful way to give back and make a significant difference in someone's life.

Host a Fundraiser
If you're feeling particularly motivated, consider hosting a fundraiser to raise money for a local charity or organization. You could organize a bake sale, a silent auction, or even a fun run. Get creative and involve your community. The possibilities are endless!

Assemble Care Kits for the Homeless
If you often wonder how you can help someone who is homeless and holding up a sign on a street corner, try assembling these simple kits.

Hunger Calendar

Spend time with your family reflecting on your abundance with this daily activity. You only need a few moments each day and some loose change to make a big impact in your community.
